Work from Home options for Moms

One of the things I am most grateful for in my life is the opportunity that I have had to be a stay-at-home mom for the first few years of my children’s lives. It’s not always possible in today’s economy so I know what a privilege it has been. That being said there does come a point when money has to be made and now that both my kids are at school every morning I have been able to pick up a bit of extra work. As I am still keen to be able to do certain “mom tasks” such as school lifts and outings, I was really keen to find something that had flexible hours and allowed me the freedom of working from home. And I’m pleased to say that I have been super blessed to find meaningful work (that I enjoy), that can be done from home – provided I have access to the internet and a few hours a day! The Holy Grail of Stay-at-home moms everywhere! How lucky am I?

I realize I’m not the only stay-at-home mom who has this need! Many of my friends have had a similar experience. They have loved being with their kids for the first few years of their lives and have happily made certain sacrifices to make that happen but there comes a point when they need to get back to work and, like me, are reluctant to head off to a full time position.

Since the launch of the Internet there has been an upsurge in the amount of opportunities for those looking to work from home but the biggest advance has been the arrival of broadband… Broadband had made so many more opportunities possible. I recall not too many years ago the familiar “dialing” up of the dial up internet connection we had. It was far from reliable and super slow. I can’t tell you how my life has changed since we signed up for broadband. This little blog would not be here were it not for broadband and neither would my new position be possible!

Today the pulse of every modern home is the Internet. It keeps us entertained, educated, updated, and connected to friends and family. And for stay-at-home mothers, the internet can be a source of income or a link to their working world.

Some of the options that the Internet has opened up for working from home include flexi hours for your current position, starting later or leaving earlier to fit in the school lift while catching up online during the hours after the kids are in bed, working for a company based overseas, holding meetings via Skype to avoid excess travel, working a few hours a day online or using services such as Dropbox to avoid unnecessary courier fees or delivery trips. Work-from-home moms are making the most of the data revolution!

One thing that working moms all over South Africa seem to agree on is that it is hard to strike a good work-home balance. With Telkom’s fixed broadband, setting up a home office or starting up an Internet-based business has never been simpler. And technical hassles are a thing of the past as all subscribers have access to free assistance – which is especially great for those not-so-tech-savvy moms out there!
It truly is the generation of tech start-ups, and moms everywhere are embracing e-commerce from the comfort of their homes. To do this successfully you need a fast, reliable, always-on Internet provider. Telkom checks all the boxes and can offer you an affordable service.

When looking to work-from-home one of the first things to do is to identify what skills you already possess and what experience you have that would transfer easily to a new position. For example if you worked as a PA before you might like to become a Virtual Assistant – these online PA’s are very popular in the US and the trend is sure to make it’s way to South Africa shortly!

For those of you looking to work from home via the Internet I thought I would put together a list of work-from-home options for Moms….

Another one of the many benefits of having fixed Internet is that it creates a ‘connected home’, ensuring everyone in your family has access, using multiple devices. While you sit at the pool with your tablet, laptop or smartphone and connect wirelessly to the Internet, your husband and children are dotted around the home, connected via various devices. As you update your business blog, or check your bank statement on the Internet, your husband is on a video conference call with an international colleague; all the while your younger child is gaming, and your teenager is streaming music and movies. The endless benefits of using the Internet are at your fingertips and the time saved not having to visit the bank, or by doing your shopping online, can now be spent with those most precious to you.

Choosing Telkom’s fixed broadband assures you of a high-speed consistent wireless service, with little or no latency. For more information visit and click on ‘do Broadband’.

Do you work from home? What do you do? I’d love to hear how you make it work so please feel free to share any tips, comments or suggestions about how you make working from home work for you and your family in the comments below!

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. Hi there,

    1. Hi Christelle – what a lovely comment. Thank you for taking the time to send your feedback. I do love hearing from readers around the country who feel like they connect with me and what I am blogging about! Making money from blogging is a tough one – there are various options but let it be said you won’t be raking in piles of cash. I do it because I love it and as you said it opens doors to meeting people and experiencing new things!

  3. Hi Kathryn,

  4. Hi Kathryn

I’ve been involved in Hr as a consultant for many years. Although I don’t have a formal degree I have extensive experience in HR, recruitment and payroll. I stopped working in 2010 when my eldest son was born and had another baby in 2016. Both kids are in school and I do love being a stay at home mom but feel like I’m ready to apply my skills and knowledge to something I can do from home, that ties in with my career background. I have enrolled in a Hr short course and would like to get your opinion if you think that there are online jobs that I can do.

    Thank you Alison
