A few nights ago I was invited to attend a Winter Style Trends Session with David Jones at Woolworths hosted by the ever stylish Jackie Burger! One of my fashion icons.
I loved the evening and found the styling info and winter style trends inspirational so I thought I’d share some tips with you here today to help you plan your own winter wardrobe purchases…
Top 5 Winter Style Tips by Jackie Burger
1. Invest in the Best
Jackie Burger is one of the most effortlessly stylish South African woman and I always enjoy listening to her styling advice as I feel her classic style is one I want to emulate!
Her golden style rule is to always choose to invest in the best quality pieces you can afford.
There are no rules on fashion for seasons any longer which means that it’s worth saving up to buy something of quality as it will likely stay “in fashion” for a long time.
The queen of the white shirt, Jackie always suggests building up a wardrobe of classic investment pieces that are modern and minimalist. She suggests choosing items made with care and in quality fabrics and classic cuts.
Two of the key items she mentioned from the David Jones winter collection were their gorgeous shift and shirt dresses, of which she reckons you can never have too many!
2. An Elegant Coat is Essential
Fashion should be comfortable and wearable and that is even more important when you think of what you’re going to wear during winter! No one wants to look great but feel freezing so when you think of Winter Fashion one of the most essential items to add to your winter wardrobe is an elegant coat that can transition from the cooler days of Autumn to the icy days of Winter.
Jackie says she invests in one new coat each winter to add to her classic collection. This season the Trench Coat is a classic choice. (knot the belt at the back to give some shape to your figure!)
Other coat styles to keep an eye out for when shopping this winter are the parka, the herringbone, the navy blazer and the luxury puffer.
3. Layering is Luxe
The key to updating your winter style this year is layering… but when you do indulge in this winter style trend be sure to remember the most important style rule for layering – add different textures!!
A great piece to invest in this winter if you’re keen to try out the layering trend is a long length cardigan with a bit of weight that will drape (Often it’s best to buy one size up!)
4. Tactile Textures
Speaking of textures…
Winter is all about adding a touch of luxe to your wardrobe as you start to wear heavier fabrics and textures.
One trend that is popular is to wear one colour head to toe, but the essential aspect of this trend is, yet again, texture!
One fabric you might like to look out for this winter is faux fur (definitely faux tho!) This tactile texture certainly adds a dash of luxury to any outfit!
5. Focus on the Finer Details
What David Jones gets so right is their hidden details and quality hardware on their garments. These added extras add an allure to an outfit and are always worth paying a little bit extra for!
Accessories are key in an understated wardrobe to push the boundaries as they create balance and harmony so be daring and add a splash of animal print (leopard and zebra print are currently big but keep an eye out for giraffe print in the future!)
Fun ways to add finer details include using silk scarves – around your neck or tied on your bag. But be sure to never tie these with too much effort… the aim is to look casually chic (think French style!)
In terms of shoes styles this season, the court shoe is making a comeback thanks to it’s elegant shape. Menswear inspired shoes are also big this winter.
Colours to add to your winter wardrobe include berry tones, forest greens and pops of red – surprisingly the colour that suits most skin tones if you can believe it! Maybe it’s time to invest in something red for the season! I’m quite taken with this red shirt dress myself!

Isn’t she so amazing… Jackie Burger is total style goals!!!
Indeed! I worked with her when I was editor of a wedding magazine and she was so innovative and clever and inspiring. I have yet to attend one of her Salon “dos”. In the interim I might just have to have a date with David J.
