It’s February – the Month of Love!
Yes, Valentines Day is upon us again and everywhere you turn there is red hearted romance on display. Basically, the day is torture if you’re anything other than a teenager in the first flush of love (whom I kidding, being a teenager is torture too!)
To be honest I’m not quite sure who Valentine’s Day is meant for anymore? Is it for the secret admirers, the young lovers, the pre-school kids making cards for their mamas? I don’t know if it’s meant for me anymore now that I’ve been married almost 15 years… I can’t tell you when last I got a Valentine!
I did a little bit of reading about the real story of St Valentine and discovered that it’s certainly changed from the days of St Valentine!
Waaaay back in the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and, finally, decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage amidst a rather amoral society. Heavy days! Now that’s not all a bed of roses is it??
The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to a blind girl who he had prayed with and who was healed from her blindness. It was signed “from your Valentine.”
Over the years Valentine came to be known as the patron saint of lovers, but, on further research about his story I discovered that he was in fact much more in favour of marriage than lovers. The very reason he was sentenced to death was because he was performing secret marriage ceremonies for those Christians who believed in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman (and didn’t agree with the polygamous lifestyles of the day!)
I think this story really highlighted to me the true message of St Valentine, especially to married couples: Love is actually not easy at all! There will come a time in all marriages where you are going to suffer or struggle. It’s not going to be easy to maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage, especially in this modern world. The ‘gushy’ love that typifies first love will change and mature and turn into true love – the kind that lasts a lifetime. The kind that is a daily choice. The kind that goes the distance. The kind that never fails!
That kind of love is very special indeed… and is equally worth celebrating!
Whether you’ve been married for 50 years or 5 or not at all… There’s surely someone in your life that deserves a little bit of love this Valentine’s Day. Everyone loves a reminder that they are special and cherished and that is what the 14th of February is all about. Celebrating love!
This year why not spoil someone – even if you haven’t “done” Valentines day in 15 years (Ahem, husband!!)
It could be it your lover, your child, a friend, your mum or dad, a granny or granddad, brother or sister, even your spouse! It’s a great day to say “I love you”. Yes we shouldn’t need an excuse or a special day to say it BUT it needs to be said and if there is a special day then why not!?
