I recently came across a new food and wine blogger called Katy and loved her blog so much that I knew I had to feature her in my What I… blogger series.
Her blog, Katy’s Table, started as a creative outlet to write about food & wine but it has evolved to include other lifestyle topics such as travel, culture and how to live the good life.
Read on to find out more about Katy and her blog…
Travel is the best education you can ever receive – it teaches you skills you could never learn in a classroom. I am a braver, more independent, more tolerant person because of my years traveling abroad. You learn to be resourceful, understanding, adventurous and curious. It took me a long time to get over the fear of being in a strange place and the awkwardness of ‘being a tourist’ and to just jump in and get involved. I try to do that a little every day now that I live in Cape Town.
Supermarkets. Sleeping with the windows open. Nectarines. French Vouvray. Movie night on the couch with pizza. The smell of airports. Hip Hop Mashups. Table Mountain. Baked Camembert. Antique jewellery. Touching pincushion proteas. Driving. Clean hair. Ice Cream. Puppies.
My kindle, about 2 hours a day. I almost never read fiction because I find it just too emotional, so instead I bury myself in History, Travel and Cooking Books. My favourite authors (there are many!) starts with Michael Pollan, Mark Kurlansky, A.N Wilson and Judith Flanders.
I have a Jancis Robinson Oxford Companion to Wine on my shelf, but I’ve only just dipped my toe into it. It’s HUGE!
I spent many years chasing bigger and bigger paychecks until one day I realised that I actually wanted to enjoy my job, and not resent the people I was working for. Now I have the best job I’ve ever had (Retail Manager for The Creamery Ice Cream Company) and I work with wonderful people, but there are times when I wish Job Satisfaction and Financial Security could live together in harmony.
I have only recently started introducing colour into my wardrobe – blue pumps, pink hair ties, burgundy nail polish and green eyeliner. I used to be a blur of beige and white linen but I’m jazzing things up a little now. As a rule I dress for comfort – solid shoes are a must when you’re on your feet for 9 hours a day. I never leave the house without a bra (who are those women?), a little (or a lot of) makeup, sunblock & some scent.
Peace and quiet and some time to myself. My ideal lifestyle would be to live in a beautiful house all by myself, with a big kitchen to entertain and feed my friends every once in a while. I relish a weekend at home cooking, reading, gardening and just being silent. I need my friends and family – I am blessed with strong safety net of wonderful people who have helped me through the tough times.
