What I… Cherralle from My Daily Cake

I’m loving reviving my What I… Blogger Interview series and showcasing all the new up-and-coming South African blogs there are about these days. SO many! My Daily Cake is a South African working mom blog, where you can find parenting and career related stories and advice. Written by Cheralle, the aim of her blog is to to inspire working mothers to be more focused, healthier, and embrace the decisions they make for the sake of their careers and families.

There is no such thing as a perfect mom, only a real one!

What I…

I know that the only thing that limit us are ourselves! I believe that anyone can do anything if they are willing to take a chance and pay the price.

Example, I have always loved writing, but I never saw myself as writing anything of worth. I do not get English grammar.

I have put in the hours into learning how to write, how to write online copy, and now I have hundreds of thousands of people reading and responding to what I write.

I have also decided to expand my skills. Although I specialize in Human Resources (HR), I am not limited to only doing this.

I have been upgrading myself in Digital Marketing which has been hard work but fun. It has added a fun dynamic to my day job (HR) as I can now bring in the digital marketing angle.

So, anyone who wants to try something out, go for it. But be prepared to pay the price (in time and sometimes money).

I absolutely love alone time. That is how I am.

I love my kids and my husband, but I need to step away every now and then for a few hours to recharge. I am who I am.

I am an introvert, and I know that because being with people makes me tired after a while. I need to step away and be alone to feel myself again.

I am an avid reader. I remember in primary school, walking around school as we changed classrooms with my nose stuck in a book.

I was weird like that. Not “Miss Popularity” as you can imagine.

My mother would come home every day around 16h00. If it were a library day, I would eagerly wait for her to walk with me to the library. It was a 1 – 2 kilometers walk and I had to wait for her to accompany me as I was still in primary school.

I would love to impart a love of reading my girls. To encourage reading, I try to make reading super fun in our home. We do ‘dramatic’ readings (it’s embarrassing, but the girls love it).

And in 2018 I have started taking my four-year-old to the library. Surprisingly, she has been enjoying it.

The last few books I read that I would recommend are:

Jody Picoult – Small Great Things

Shonda Rhimes – Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person

Amy Chua – Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom

I want to go to Disney World with my family; it is a goal that we have set. When my youngest is around four and my eldest will be seven we want to do this. Let’s hope our South African currency grows from strength to strength.

I now work for a Beauty and Skincare brand, and I am required to wear makeup. I am so loving it! It is still minimal, but I had to up my game a bit.

For makeup I wear:

  • BB cream or tinted moisturizer (I am not competent enough to apply proper foundation!)
  • Eyes: Eye Liner, Mascara, Eye Shadow
  • Lips: I wear lipstick every day. As my skin is dry everywhere, I always wear a lip balm as a base for the lipstick.

I have recently worn RED lipstick for the first time in my life, and I LOVE IT. Please ladies, get yourself RED lipstick, it is everyone’s shade!

I wish I could dress better.

  • At work, I dress ‘smart’: pencil skirts, pants, tops, heels, dresses, etc. I love wearing heels at work; it gives me a boost of confidence. Like I AM A BOSS!
  • On the Weekends it’s jeans and sneakers.
  • In the house it is tracksuits and leggings, anything comfortable.

I only need the simple things. If my kids and I are healthy and well, I am happy.

Oh, and I guess my husband too. Plus, the extended family. Okay, the whole family! As long everyone is healthy and well.

The other thing I need is my laptop. Drop me anywhere with a laptop and let me write!

Thanks so much for taking part in this interview Cheralle. So lovely to meet you 🙂

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
