What I… Chereen Gibson from For the beauty of it

This morning my “What I…” feature is all about Chereen Gibson – beauty editor of O, The Oprah Magazine and beauty blogger over at For the beauty of it. As you might have picked up Chereen is obsessed about all things beauty and probably has the best job for someone who loves magazines and beauty products – what a lucky girl! Here she shares some more of her wants, needs and loves. Read on…

What I…

That change is as good as a holiday, be it a change in career, a new haircut or colour or simply a change in routine. I thrive on change; there’s nothing worse than being stuck in a rut and I pride myself on the fact that, somehow, I am always able to make change happen, even though it may scare the pants off me at the time!

My fiancé: He is the most amazing man I have ever known. He is kind, gentle and patient and he makes me laugh every day. Oh, and he cooks! And plays bass guitar, too!
My pets: I have two gorgeous cats, Cleo and Raphael, and the most loving little dachshund, Phoebe. I’ve always been more of a ‘cat’ person, but Phoebe makes it very difficult not to love dogs! Cleo is the most elegant, regal cat with such a gentle manner, while Raphy is loud, boisterous and clumsy. I love them so!
My family: I am lucky enough to have amazing parents who are very open and allow their children the freedom to make their own mistakes and to learn from them. I appreciate this more and more the older I get and the closer I am to starting my own family. I have four brothers and even though we’ve had our moments growing up, our relationships have all grown and developed into such tight bonds as we’ve reached adulthood. They’ve known me my whole life and love me despite any flaws I might have, and I can’t imagine life without them.
Magazines: I’ve always been obsessed with magazines. I remember sneaking my mom’s copies of Elle and Cosmopolitan into maths class when I was about 13 years old, and I used to blow all my pocket money on buying them, much to my dad’s annoyance. (Just look at where that landed me, huh dad?)
Lotions and Potions: I may be surrounded by beauty products day in and day out but I’ll never tire of them! There’s nothing better than unwrapping a brand new lipstick or trying a hot new nail colour for the first time.
Leonardo DiCaprio: Still.
Super-high heels: The higher, the better. The best bit? After years of practice, it’s safe to say that I have mastered the art of walking in high heels.
Road trips: I love adventuring. Whether it’s a two hour drive along the Peninsula or a long-haul drive to Johannesburg, there’s nothing better than hitting the road with a few good tunes, some padkos and my handsome partner-in-crime. And I’ll always indulge in one of my all-time favourite guilty pleasures: a Wimpy burger for breakfast. Yes, dad – even at 6am.

I’ve just started reading The Happiness Project by Gretchin Rubin. I’ve always been a big reader and even studied English Literature at university, but I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve gone from reading at least 2 books a week to reading, oh, about 2 books a year! These days I’m more likely to read magazines and blogs!

My fiancé and I have spent the last month looking for a new home and we’re yet to find the perfect spot, so that’s right at the top of my list at the moment. We’re also in the process of planning our wedding and I’m yet to find the perfect location, so you can add a dream venue to the list, too. And on an incredibly superficial note, I’m currently craving: a glitzy pair of Miu Miu shoes, an iPhone and a gorgeous handbag I saw at Forever New a couple of months ago.

A lot of black. I’m not afraid of colour, though – my favourite nail colour at the moment is Chanel Le Vernis in ‘Holiday’, a bright tangerine shade that forms part of Chanel’s upcoming summer collection. And I’m a big fan of fragrances. My current favourites include Jo Malone Wild Bluebell, Gucci Guilty, Thierry Mugler Angel and Calvin Klein Beauty (amongst others!).

A lot of ‘me-time’. There’s nothing I love more than a long bubble bath, followed by a steaming cup of coffee beside the fire while reading a glossy magazine or catching up on episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve learnt that I need to take some time out and indulge in alone time at least once a week, otherwise I can be very grumpy!

Thanks so much for taking part Chereen – it’s so lovely getting to know more about the blogger behind the blog especially finding out things we have in common – magazines and road trips are two of my loves too!

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
