Very little about a lot of things. I’m incurably curious and love to learn, but I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’m never going to be an expert in anything. There’s too much fascinating stuff in the world to choose just one thing to think about.
This country. I’ve travelled enough to know how damn awesome South Africa is – and Cape Town in particular. Sure, we’ve got problems (lots of them), but you’d better believe visitors from overseas when they gush about how great this place is.
Everything. I’m the despair of my more erudite friends because, while I’ll happily devour Dickens and Dostoevsky, I adore trashy chick lit and think Harry Potter is a literary masterpiece. I’m not a paper snob: I believe the Kindle is the best thing ever to happen to books. Right now I’m reading my friend Justin Fox’s new book, The Impossible Five.
Never to have a job again. For some people, I think a desk can be a safe and happy haven. For me, it’s a gilded cage, and I tend to snarl at people when I’m in one. I’m trying really hard to figure out how to make my current temporary ‘retirement’ last forever. Mr Money Mustache is my hero.
Pyjamas, mostly. This isn’t as slothful as it sounds, as I’ve discovered that I get much more work done if I don’t actually get out of bed. Otherwise, jeans, t-shirts, trainers and a foolish grin.
Travel. The only time in my adult life that I haven’t felt a compulsion to go haring off somewhere new was when I was severely depressed. If I’m not busy planning or perpetrating a ridiculous adventure, send me back to therapy! My next adventure starts in September, when I’ll be walking the Camino de Santiago and then hanging out in Amsterdam eating poffertjies for a couple of months.
