Weekend Wanderings: Boschendal Farm Shop

One of my favourite things to do is to head out to the Cape winelands to discover somewhere new, or somewhere old!

I love driving through the verdant valleys and majestic mountain passes, soaking up the scenery.

In recent years Boschendal, near Franschhoek, has become a favourite destination due to the variety of experiences available. There’s a beautiful manor house, secluded spa, delicious deli and The Werf restaurant, kids play area and bike ramps and a bountiful vegetable garden to explore.

The latest addition to the Boschendal estate is the beautiful Boschendal Farm Shop which I visited a few weekends back… and I can tell you now that’s it’s where you need to head THIS weekend!

The Boschendal Farm Shop is an aesthetic delight. As someone who LOVES contemporary country style decor and all things about the rural lifestyle, I was smitten by this space.

Masterfully curated, my favourite find was the homeware collection. A range of bespoke pieces carefully sourced from small, artisan suppliers located within 300km of the estate. The quality of each homeware item is apparent and I loved browsing the beautiful displays.

There are perfectly imperfect handmade ceramics from Wonki Ware in George. Items that reflect South Africa’s rural landscape from Storm in a Teacup. Handcrafted wood ware made exclusively on the farm or crafted in an artisanal studio in Woodstock from oak and South African olive wood. Good old fashioned baskets weaved in Paarl using time-honoured techniques and preserved hydrangaes in a rainbow of colours.

The shop also offers a variety of farm produce sourced from local supplies and their own abundant Food Garden where the produce harvested is 100% organic. Vegetables, fruit, herbs and even fresh flowers and plants are available to purchase.

The deli shelves are filled to overflowing with preserves, cheeses, jams, honey, olive oil and wine so you will certainly not leave empty handed!

Their in-house artisan bakery offers freshly baked breads made from premium ingredients and are delicious with lashing of farm fresh butter. Alongside the bakery is a coffee counter serving up fresh brews and an assortment of sweet treats. Don’t miss out on their famous Pasteis de Nata!

At the Boschendal Butchery you can find the best cuts of meat, matured to perfection. Boschendal has their own herd of Black Angus cows that roam the green pastures of the estate, fertilising the soil and restoring the land and their forest-reared Duroc pigs forage among the trees for roots and acorns and help to get rid of alien vegetation – the epitome of sustainability!

After all your browsing you’re sure to have worked up an appetite, so if you can’t wait ’til you get home, pop in to the The Deli for a hearty farm breakfast, lunch or dinner. A highlight of our meal was the delicious Farm Bowl which I can highly recommend as a way to truly taste the farm! Bookings are essential.

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
