Last weekend we spent our Saturday morning doing something a bit different from our usual options of gardening, shopping, kids parties, coffee at Seattle. We paid a visit to Vrygond, located a few km’s from our own home but where over 40 000 people live with limited electricity, water, shelter and food and an unemployment rate of over 70%.
The purpose of the visit was for us as a family to discover what needs there are in our local neighbourhood and find ways that we can get involved to help those in need or those who are already involved in uplifting the area. We chose to take our kids along to expose them to realities that are on our doorstep – but we came away equally shocked, moved and challenged! We met a friend of ours, Vicky, at the local community center and she spoke about the work she has been invovled with spear heading through her organization called Little 2 Much. She also introduced us to a few of the current creche owners she has been walking alongside and then we went to visit one of the creches located in a neighbouring area called Overcome. There are 5 creches in the area and currently about 1000 of the 4000 pre-school children in the area attend these… (approx 25%) The one we visited has 55 kids in a 5 x 10m space with one portaloo toilet!
When I started the blog I included a Charity page which was a means for Moms like myself to find a way to give back to the less fortunate by donating their second hand baby clothes and goods. As an extension of that and as Christmas is around the corner I thought it would be a great time to shift some of the focus off ourselves and our families and on to those with far less joy and far greater needs in their lives at this time of year!
I would like to send out a challenge to my lovely readers – I have a list of essentials that the 5 creches in Vrygrond and Overcome are desperately in need of, it’s a long list but many of the items are things we take forgranted such as essential cleaning materials like dishwashing liquid, disinfectant for toilets, hand soap and washing powder! Maybe you can consider sponsoring one item or donating money towards an ongoing contribution throughout the year or even ask a friend or family member involved in a corporate who might want to consider this organization and community as their charitable cause for 2012!
Some of the needs are:
School uniforms for those going to Grade 1 next year including school bags, raincoat
Salary for full time assistant to Vicky
