A visit to Van Loveren Wine Estate

One of our favourite valleys to spend time in is the Breede River Valley as the surrounding towns all offer such great getaway options from McGregor, Bonnievale, Robertson, Ashton etc. Whenever we spend time in the area we always have one fail-safe destination whatever the weather… Van Loveren Wine Estate (a member of Cape Country Routes)

We know whether we are camping or staying in a self-catering cottage there will always be an opportunity to pop in to the oasis that is the gorgeous garden of this historical family-friendly estate.

We’ve headed here many times in the height of summer when the cool shade of the towering trees has offered welcome respite from the heat and a new space for the kids to explore.

This is a great destination for families and kids will be kept busy enjoying the gardens while the parents unwind and enjoy one of the amazing wine and food pairings from the menu – either at their restaurant table amidst the foliage or in the super stylish wine tasting venue.

On a recent visit to Van Loveren we were welcomed with a glass of bubbles (alcoholic or de-alcoholised!) before we enjoyed a tour of their extensive cellars.

Van Loveren has been a family farm for generations (since 1937 when Hennie Retief snr acquired the land in the Robertson Valley and named it after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his new bride, Jean van Zyl) and is now in the capable hands of the renowned Four `Cousins!

Today Van Loveren is South Africa’s leading family-owned winery known for their award-winning wines and innovation.

There are so many different Van Loveren wine ranges on offer that it’s almost impossible to list them all here, but what is great about this is that there is a wine for every taste and so this is the perfect place to head for wine tasting if you are in a group of varied personalities!

Aside from Cellar tours and wine and food tastings there are a number of other draws to entice you to visit the Van Loveren estate outside Robertson.

Greeting you on arrival are a multitude of red and yellow canna’s that line the roads of the area – indicating all the Van Loveren owned vineyards!

Once you’ve driven up the palm-lined driveway you’ll discover a wonderland for old and young alike!

Enjoy pod tastings & giant chess at the Tasting Room, garden tours, hiking & mountain biking, bird watching or a long lazy lunch under the trees at Christina’s Bistro.

A firm favourite are the thin-crusted, wood-fired pizzas, but the bistro also serves gourmet burgers and a variety of seasonal chef’s specialities. All items on the menu are made from scratch using local produce. Don’t forget to enjoy your meal with a glass of your favourite Van Loveren wine!

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
