Spa Review: Tranquila Spa at Aquila Private Game Reserve

Imagine enjoying a hot stone massage lying next to your partner in a blissfully warm room on a cold winter’s night… and then walking a few meters under the starry sky to your bed, complete with hot water bottle!

This is the exact experience I was treated to recently when we spent a night at Aquila Private Game Reserve and booked ourselves in to enjoy a couple’s treatment at their beautifully peaceful Tranquila Spa

I’m a massive fan of massage. For ultimate relaxation nothing can beat a deep tissue massage… except maybe an aromatherapy massage or a Swedish massage or a hot stone massage! I’ll take them all!

Although massage is my first love when it comes to spa treatments, I’m always open to trying new or different spa experiences which is why I booked myself and my husband in for the signature treatment on the Tranquila Spa menu during our recent visit!

The Tranquila Body Ritual is a 90 min indulgence where you are first scrubbed down from top to toe in a heated private room with a sugar body oil that removes all your dry skin and leaves you feeling super smooth (ideal for winter!). This is followed by a short shower in the same room to remove the excess product. This part of the treatment lasts about 30 mins and then it’s time for the incredible full body massage of your choice.

My husband and I were doing this treatment together as a special treat so we then made our way to the couples treatment room where warm blankets awaited us and soft scents floated through the air in the dim light. I chose to have the African Hot Stone massage, while my husband chose the Deep Tissue massage and we both floated off for an hour of blissful relaxation and stress relief at the hands of our talented local therapists.

Not much beats a massage for deep relaxation, but I’ve always found the problem is that you then have to jump back in your car and fight your way through the traffic, only to continue your day as normal – school run, supper, homework, STRESS!! What is the point? I’ve often surmised that wouldn’t it be just incredible to roll off the massage bed into your very own – only a few minutes separating one dream world to another!?

Tranquila is where I finally got to fulfill my fantasy….

Our massage session was the last one of the evening (the spa is open until 10pm!) and we quickly changed back into our clothes and headed straight out the door, turned left and headed for bed. It was completely heavenly to dive straight beneath the sheets and slip into the deep sleep that comes from ultimate relaxation. I highly recommended Tranquila for this very reason but always because it’s a wonderful, world-class spa space.

The next morning we dropped our kids at the Kids Club and headed back to enjoy the spa facilities.

First the stream room, then the heated pool and, finally, the sauna, where we stayed for as long as we could handle the heat! It was a very welcome respite from the freezing cold air temperatures outside… On our early morning game drive there was actual frost covering the ground, something you don’t see in Cape Town ever. Let’s just say those Finnish are really onto something!!
