Spa Review: The Terres D’Afrique Experience at Langaro Lifestyle Centre

When two of my favourite things are brought together (natural products & beauty treatments) in one fabulous package I really can’t resist… which is why I jumped at the chance of enjoying a treatment with organic skincare brand, Terres D’Afrique at the stunning new Langaro Lifestyle Centre in Camps Bay recently.

Terres D’Afrique is a new range of skin and body products created using traditional African botanical ingredients. These are combined in highly effective formulations and combinations; the culmination of years of exploration, field research and laboratory development. All products used in the range are ethically harvested for customers who appreciate the crafted approach that is the common denominator between the product formulations, the packaging, the store and the people involved in making it. The approach is as scientific as it is ethical and personal.

‘Whatever we do, we do with an awareness of our environmental, social and economic impact’

Stephane Helary, the founder of Terres D’Afrique has spent most of his life in Madagascar and on the African continent, traveling and exploring aspects of life in Africa. His aim is to source ingredients harvested mainly by African women,to change their lives radically for the better, sticking to Fairtrade rules. All the products are certified organic and the packaging has been designed using materials and processes with a footprint that is as light as possible. No colour additives, synthetic fragrances or any other potentially harmful chemicals have been used. Synthetic preservatives are used in miniscule quantities, and only in instances where their exclusion could potentially reduce the efficacy of the product, or compromise its safety. Animal ingredients are completely excluded.

‘We will produce a limited number of certain products if there is a scarcity of the correct ingredients. This philosophy – of behaving responsibly, observing biodiversity issues and doing what we can to make a difference in big and small ways. Even our website will be hosted by a company that audits its carbon footprint. We have sourced everything from small local producers and the end result is a product that feels not only more luxurious but is also more personal, more crafted.’

This was my first introduction to this new range of products and some of the treatments I experienced. Here are some of my thoughts…

First up I was shown into the Vichy shower room where I was given some disposable undies and towels for privacy. The Myrrh Body Scrub is applied while lying on a bed of sorts under a row of shower heads that are used intermittently to stimulate circulation with warm water and removing the scrub after use. The mild scrub is made up of organic sugar and Rooibos flakes, combined with fined Coconut shell and gives a gentle abrasion that sloughs away dead cells and stimulates blood flow. After this unique experience, with organic Baobab oil was applied to my body to increase moisturise, soften and heal my skin. I was then directed to another more comfortable room where I was massaged with a rich body butter containing jojoba oil, mafura & kigelia and fragranced with the exotic and earthy Omumbiri scent – a real “African” smell. My skin was left feeling amazingly soft and supple, refreshed and rejuvenated!

An Amanzi Hydrating Facial followed using omega-rich African oils (Marula, Manketti and Kalahari melon) to restructure and regenerate the deep layers of the skin. My skin is in major need of hydration so the ingredients of Vitamins A, B and C from the Baobab fruit were absorbed quickly and left my face feeling less tight and red and more plumped and firm. I definitely left looking better than when I arrived, and that is not always the case with harsh facials!!

Terres D’Afrique products retail from R370 for a cleanser to R750 for a facial hydrating cream to R900 for a limited edition shea body butter. You’ll find the Terres D’Afrique store at Maboneng Precinct, cnr Main Street and Kruger Street, Downtown Johannesburg. Products are also available to purchase in Cape Town from Langaro Wellness Centre in Camps Bay.

Not only were the treatments wonderful but I also really enjoyed the experience at Langaro Wellness Centre. The surroundings are beautifully luxurious and the staff are friendly. Besides spa treatments they also have a nail bar, hair salon and boutique with styling service. It is a divine space and the perfect place to spend some time chilling out.

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for almost 7 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
