The Clubhouse – a new child-friendly restaurant in Constantia

The Clubhouse is a great new family friendly restaurant situated in the heart of Constantia at the Claremont Cricket Club. Offering amazing views, a community atmosphere, great food and entertainment for the kids, it’s sure to become a popular spot in the Southern Suburbs!

We visited this family friendly eatery last week and were pleasantly surprised considering we remember the venue as a run down sports club which hosted high school and 21st parties! The transformation of the venue is amazing – in place of the  old brown paneling is a crisp, white, clean space. The bar is in the same spot which is perfect for sports players and fans but there are lovely cosy couches placed in front of a roaring fire and family-sized tables perfect for a gathering of friends with kids in tow. There is also a balcony with the most breathtaking views of Table Mountain across the cricket fields!

The venue has a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Our kids were greeted warmly with a bucket of indoor entertainment options – playdough, colouring books, uno etc) They were more than happy to spread themselves out on the floor to enjoy these. During warm afternoons (or early evenings in summer) the kids have the run of the field outside where impromptu games of rugby take place and there are plans to install an indoor play area for toddlers and a fenced and manned outside area for kids in the next few months!

When it comes to family friendly restaurants you don’t often expect much from the menu but The Clubhouse surpassed our expectations in this regard. Our kids enjoyed their meals which they choose from 8 options (R15 -R46). The hamburger was a huge hit and disappeared swiftly and the spaghetti and meatballs were very tasty. We ordered Caesar Salad Starters (unfortunately the Calamari was not available on the night) which we enjoyed (5 options, R42 – R45). Followed by a Lamb Shank and Sirloin Steak which came with chips and veggies – both were good sized portions, absolutely delicious and good value at R110 and R120 respectively. (Mains start from R55 for a salad) We shared the brownies with ice cream and again these were great although another item we were keen to try wasn’t available either. The kids loved their mini magnum ice-creams for dessert (R15 (kids) – R40).

We couldn’t fault the quality of the food, however we hope the availability of items on the menu improves as the selection is already quite small. The service was good – although we were brought the wrong wine and our main meal order was only taken after we’d finished our starter but I’m pretty sure these minor teething problems will be ironed out shortly.

With its casual atmosphere and great service, The Clubhouse is the perfect venue for unwinding with friends and family on the weekends or for a mid-week supper allowing mom a night off while being able o enjoy wholesome food not made by herself! Sports fans will enjoy gathering around the TV screens when there’s a game on or taking in live cricket action on the outside fields. And the kids will love the fun vibe of hanging out with all the other community kids. The Clubhouse would make an ideal venue for kids parties and adult functions too!

We had a great evening at The Clubhouse and will definitely be going back soon – this spot is sure to become a hugely popular family restaurant in the Southern Suburbs and come summer my prediction is that you’ll struggle to get a table!

  1. Thanks for the post Kathryn, we’re always on the lookout for good child friendly restaurants.

  2. On the strength of your review we took our children to an early supper at The Clubhouse yesterday. The view is divine and the restaurant is pleasantly appointed. (My four-year-old son even commented on the beautiful flowers in the bathroom – freeshias, my favourite!) Our boys inhaled the spaghetti bolognaise and meatballs and enjoyed having grapetiser with the straw stuck through the lid (clever way to serve it for children). My husband had the Asian calamari (yum!) and I had the sirloin sandwich – a very generous portion of melt-in-your-mouth steak on a German roll. The children then went to play outside while we finished our meal. The waiting staff were friendly and helpful and the prices were reasonable. We will definitely be back. Thanks for the recommendation!

    1. Thanks for taking them time to share feedback about your experience Tracy. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your visit! Will def be visiting again soon ourselves
