Theatre Review: Swan Lake ballet at The Artscape

On Saturday I took my little ballerina along to the UCT Dance School open day. It was our first visit and I wasn’t too sure what to expect and if she would actually be able to enjoy the outing but it turned out to be a really lovely “mommy date” morning!

We had to wait a while for spot to open up inside the studio but fortunately managed to sneak in 10 mins into the rehearsal for Swan Lake – and it was so special to watch the ballerinas I’ve seen dancing on stage up close and personal.

The choreographer was really great, talking the audience through many of the steps and emotions behind the ballet. I loved it and so did my daughter – who obviously went dressed up in her own ballet leotard and tutu – I couldn’t drag her away as she was so enthralled by it all. And after her amazing concentration skills during the rehearsal I’m seriously considering taking her to her first ballet at the theatre….

After the rehearsal we also popped in at two of the other studios to watch a contemporary dance class and African dance class respectively. Between these classes we were able to get a good look at the magnificent costumes and even got to see some of the ballet dancers warming up and waiting back stage in their outfits before their fundraising performance of Swan Lake.We even snapped a pic or 3…. How excited does she look! #melt.

Swan Lake is one of the most beloved ballet stories and the story of Odette/ Odile is well known. This classic ballet will be showing at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town from 5 – 20 April, performed by dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet, good news for classical music lovers is that certain performances will be accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra!

Odette, is turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart and his spell can only be broken by true, pure love. Odette falls in love with Prince Siegfried, who is tricked into falling in love with Odile, Von Rothbart’s daughter.

Tickets range from R100 – R320 and are available via Computicket OR via Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695. Please note that the last two performances on Sat 19 and Sun 20 April will be danced by special guest stars from The Royal Ballet in London – Hikaru Kobayashi & Federico Bonelli.

  1. I love the ballet! Unfortunately there are very few performances to see in East London. I do try and go whenever I can while in Durbs though. Isn’t Swan Lake just beautiful??

    1. We are very spoilt in CT with so many beautiful ballets every year! And yes, Swan Lake is absolutely one of my favourites!!
