Sunday afternoons are all about lazying in the sun with those you love while enjoying delicious food and wine… and we recently found the perfect spot for a lazy Sunday lunch, where the food is prepared beautifully (by someone else) and the kids are kept entertained (by someone else) Does it get any better for moms? Nope, I don’t think so!
Recently The Alphen Hotel in Constantia has re-launched their Sunday Funday and we went along to check it out!
Our chosen Sunday afternoon was sunny and bright, with the first crisp Autumn leaves appearing on the oaks over our head.
After being shown to our seats and ordering something for the kids to drink we then made our way across the parking area to the central grassed space where Bazinga Parties set up their fun games and activities for kids from 12:30 – 16:00 every Sunday afternoon.
For just R50 per child (donated to Red Cross Children’s Hospital) you can be assured of the fact that your kids are being well taken care of by childminders that are seeing to their every need…. face-painting, crafting, jumping castles, soccer, balloon animals are all on offer to keep them busy from the moment they arrive. In fact once we had taken our kids food order and dropped them off we didn’t see them again until we went back to fetch them when their food was getting cold!
Back at our table on the patio at Blanko, we settled into our comfortable seats, positioned ourselves to get just the right amount of sun on our shoulders and ordered a cocktail to enjoy while listening to the live jazz band! Sunday Funday indeed!
For starters we ordered a trio off the menu… Foodie Ben wanted to try the Calamari which was a great choice and both his mom and dad kept pinching pieces off his plate!
Brad ordered the Zucchini Bruschetta with Goats Milk Cheese and I ordered the Mixed Fried Seafood with prawns, calamari & sardines.
For the kids we opted for pizza for Abi (she tweaked the Margarita to her own taste!), while once again Foodie Ben made an epic choice with his Carbonara pasta… Why don’t I eat more pasta?? WOW this one made me seriously question my recent food choices. More pasta please!
Brad and I both opted for fish from the menu (we’re both trying our best to be healthy and to eat less red meat)
Brad tried the Grilled Sole with Potato Purée, Spinach & Caper Lemon Butter which he was very happy with. If there’s salmon on the menu I always feel drawn to it as a chance to up my Omega 3s, but also because I really do love this fish. I opted for the Grilled Salmon with New Baby Potatoes & Italian Salsa Verde and it was another great choice.
All our main meals were delicious and we couldn’t find fault with the food at all!
Our waiter was also really attentive and the atmosphere on the patio was lovely thanks to the live music and beautiful surroundings.
For dessert the kids went for the standard vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce while I opted for the more sophisticated choice of Chocolate Tart with Salted Caramel, Hazelnuts & Ricotta. From a presentation point of view this dessert was a win! Just so pretty! But I also loved the little drops of salted caramel, the crunchy hazelnuts and the decadent chocolate. Seriously this needs to be experienced!!
Brad’s currently on a Panna Cotta pluck and seems to be ordering this off the dessert menu at every restaurant we visit. Soon he’ll be able to tell you where to find the Panna Cotta in Cape Town based on all his experience! At Blanko he tried their Panna Cotta with Vanilla, Lemon, Basil, Strawberries & Olive Oil.
We had a wonderful relaxed Sunday lunch at Blanko and our kids thoroughly enjoyed the activities on offer, so much so that, when we were finally ready to leave, they weren’t!
A lazy afternoon under the oaks at The Alphen Hotel was the ideal way to round out the weekend for us adults wanting to sit back and relax, while our kids had a super Sunday afternoon too. The only thing that might have made the experience even better was sharing it with friends, so next time we will probably have even more fun if we have another family with kids join us… we’ll be sure to do that next time!
