Summer Season Fashion Trends by Julie at Off the Rails

Earlier this month I was invited to attend the Summer Season Fashion event hosted by Julie Ranzani from Off the Rails at Kelvin Grove.

This event is held by Julie every 6 months and the idea behind it is that she educates women on the various fashion trends coming up for the season ahead and also gives them ideas on how to wear them, wear to shop and what to buy!

I arrived and was blown away by the sheer number of women attending – almost 200! Around the edge of the ballroom were various stalls selling some of the items Julie would be referencing including Alessia Boutique, Willow tree leather handbags, Moois & Meer lace garments and Nicky Healy imported fashions.

During the event Julie spoke through each of the trends we will be seeing in stores for Spring/ Summer 2014 and then had a selection of items on her rails to demonstrate the looks. Three models also wore various outfits to showcase the trends.

I loved how Julie had a selection of items from various stores and was always quick to let you know where to go to find the items she had selected as well as where to find the trends at a price you can afford. The stores she seemed to shop at most included Country Road at Woolworths, Poetry, Zara, Old Khaki, Truworths & Desray which are all already on my well worn list of ones I frequent most (except Desray – I need to pop in there!) as well as the more upmarket Nicky Healy & Alessia Boutique.

Here are a few pics of the evening… and keep reading for a bit more info on which trends to keep your eyes out for in stores!

Key Summer Season Fashion Trends for Spring/ Summer 2014

1. Mixed Bouquet – Florals are huge this season from pretty pastels to large botanicals on dark backgrounds there is an abundance of blooms to be had! Look out for foliage jungle prints and watercolour brush strokes on printed tops, pants & dresses.

2. White on White – A very pretty look for summer esp against tanned arms and legs (fake only please!) This look is all about combining textures in all white – think crochet, lace, tulle, ruffles and more – from top to toe!

3. Candy Girl – Pretty and pink is all grown up and again worn top to toe. Sugary shades and pretty pastels such as lilac, mint, soft yellows and power blues are the key colours to look out for.

4. Shine On – Metallics in all tones are huge – gold, silver, chrome, bronze. Look out for fabrics such as lame, chainmail, foil and alloy.

5. Sport Luxe – This is probably the BIGGEST trend for Spring/ Summer 2014. This is gym wear with a difference – track pants, gym shorts, racer back tops, brightly coloured trainers, plimsolls – but this is worn well, in upmarket fabrics and on purpose. NOT after you’ve been sweating in it for an hour on the treadmill – that is NOT the trend 😉

6. Monochrome – This look never goes away and for good reason. It’s always a classy, classic combo. A white shirt is the key item for this look and paired with a monochrome pair of pants will look fresh and stylish.

7. Bohemian – Think global traveler rather than safari suit here. There is a big trend towards North African inspired fashion such as Morocco. Look out for tribal prints, elaborate embroidery, fringing and animal prints worn with loose linen and leather sandals.

8. In the Navy – Mixing different shades and tones of blues together is big, especially when paired with pure white.

I certainly found the evening really interesting and it made hitting the shops that much simpler knowing what to look out for! We also all walked away with a lovely goodie bag of treats and vouchers and it’s a great fun evening out with a girlfriend or two!

Julie hosts these seasonal presentations twice a year in Cape Town to her own client database (in Winter and Summer). I’ll definitely be keen to attend the next event in Autumn/ Winter 2015! Please contact her if you wish to be added to her database and go along to her next event.
