Spa Review: Jiva Spa at The Taj Hotel

Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend and to celebrate in style I spent a few hours enjoying some spoils at The Taj Hotel last weekend… a little early, but timing isn’t essential…it’s the time that counts!

Obviously escaping life’s routine is always welcomed and a solo sojourn would have been a treat BUT this time around I wanted to share the fun with a very special mom. One of my closest and longest standing friends has been having a rather rough time lately… not only has she been having to deal with a breast cancer diagnosis, surgery and chemo over the past 6 months – she’s also been parenting a toddler and a baby – and kids don’t let up on the sleep deprivation, endless illness and toddler tantrums just because mom is fighting for her life. Nope.

Despite her really rocky road she’s continued to push on, sharing her story with irreverent humour in her Facebook journal (caution cursing ahead!)

As a friend I’ve been feeling so helpless at knowing how I could step in and ease her load.

When this amazing opportunity came along I knew the perfect person who totally deserved some pampering time out at one of the best spas in Cape Town….

Jiva Spa at The Taj Hotel is inspired by the fabled lifestyle and culture of Indian royalty through the centuries.

At its essence, 6 000-year-old Eastern wellness philosophies are used to align body, soul and mind, encapsulating the ‘science of longevity’ with the wisdom of the ages. Holistic treatments are enlivened with meaningful ceremonies and rituals that encourage total relaxation.

Taj Cape Town boasts the only Jiva Spa in Africa – and this calming cocoon is certainly one of my favourite spas in Cape Town. A soon as I stepped through the doors I was transported to another dimension. All stress floating away on the soothing aromatherapy scents and tinkling music…

Here everything that touches the body is completely natural, think organic cotton, sun-bleached fabric, oven-baked pottery and soy cotton. The therapists are quiet and calming, speaking with soothing tones and touching with healing hands.

After changing into our robes and enjoying some wind down time in the relaxation area, we were both shown to our respective rooms for an indulgent 90 minutes.

I initially enjoyed the massage aspect of the special Autumn Bliss treatment (running until the end of June) which was followed by a Spa Energising Facial as well as a mini manicure all while drifting off to dreamland in the warm embrace of my treatment bed.

As massage is not recommended for those currently undergoing chemotherapy, my friend enjoyed an extended facial and a pampering pedicure before we met up again for fresh fruit, sweet tea and time to come back down to earth in the restorative relaxation room…

After spending a few minutes enjoying the serenity of this space, we floated down to enjoy the spread of treats at the High Tea table in the lounge area of The Taj.

Despite our best efforts, we hardly made a dent in the spread on offer! What we did enjoy most however was the time together and our afternoon was made even more memorable by the fact that this was a spot we had enjoyed the very same tea time treat a few years ago

I think we need to make this an annual occurrence!

You too can celebrate a special mom in your life with a High Tea treat at The Taj… See below for details about their Mother’s Day event taking place this Sunday, 12 May.

Located right in the heart of Cape Town this hotel offers a secluded spa secreted away in a beautiful historical building. Specialising in utilising exclusive natural products and treatments, a few hours at Jiva will leave you feeling like Indian royalty.

Taj Cape Town’s Jiva Spa is offering various specials to spoil those in need of some soulful indulgence, including a Mother’s Day package for moms and daughters and an Autumn Bliss special which is available until the end of June!

Sophisticated and contemporary, Taj Cape Town offers visitors the perfect combination of refined luxury, rich history and elegant architecture which combines the heritage of the old with the luxury of the new. Spread across two heritage buildings, it retains the original marble pillars, vaulted ceilings, glass domes and architectural elements of the legendary Temple Chambers and the South African Reserve Bank Building, while its new tower dramatically rises above the city skyline. The hotel is located in Cape Town’s prime historical area and is within walking distance to most tourist attractions, museums, monuments, shopping outlets, bustling restaurants and nightlife.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to go far to escape the city – in fact, you can go right to its heart… The Taj Hotel located on Wale Street!

  1. I brought an online order Salwar Kameez at Jiva for my lover’s birthday. My friend suggested me to use Jiva deals from Saveplus site. I got a fabulous discount 30% off and the best place.
