Africa meets Scandi – a Skinny laMinx and Pedersen + Lennard collaboration

A while back I blogged about the new Skinny laMinx design collaborations which Heather Moore has been creating for her WDC2014 theme of cross-pollination. Today I’m pleased to introduce you to yet another creative collaboration, this time with leading furniture designer Pedersen + Lennard.

Heather has used to Skinny laMinx iconic designs – Herds and Duikers – from her first fabric collection called Sevilla Rock (inspired by the San rock art found in the Cederberg). Both are currently only available in red and in grey, so to give them a bold update, Moore decided to print them in a stark black colourway.

When the Skinny laMinx shop at 201 Bree Street opened two years ago, Moore approached Luke Pedersen and James Lennard with an idea for a unique feature wall of pegs and shelves. The duo got to work and developed a brilliant and beautiful modular design consisting of hexagonal screw-in brass pegs onto which steel shelves would slide. The design became known as the Skinny Shelf and a solid collaborative relationship was born.

Pedersen + Lennard’s pared-back Skagen collection was inspired by Luke’s Danish heritage and an old Cape bench at James’ West Coast farm. The Skagen Armchair, a wood frame loose-cushion sofa formed the perfect canvas for Moore’s bold new versions of the Duikers and Herds prints. The second collaborative piece to receive a Skinny makeover is Pedersen and Lennard’s iconic Bucket Stool, a hugely popular design handmade in various townships across the Western Cape.

Both Skinny laMinx and Pedersen + Lennard are deeply inspired by Scandinavian design, seamlessly fusing the clean, simple Scandi style with the optimistic, fresh energy of their African roots.

“This year is an opportunity to focus on combining design aesthetic with local skill, creativity and knowledge and celebrate what is already here, while we have the world’s attention,” says Lennard.

The Skagen Armchair and Bucket Stool are available for purchase from the Pedersen + Lennard showroom in the Woodstock Exchange and selected pieces from the Skinny laMinx shop in Bree Street, Cape Town.

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
