The Best Skincare Products for Moms (according to South Africa’s Top Beauty Blogging Moms!)

This week is all about the mama’s of the world as the world celebrates Mother’s Day… (let’s be honest every darn day should be, but we’ll take a day!)

To celebrate this special day I thought I’d combine my love of beauty and my love for bloggers into one fabulous post that speaks to my mom readers (bear with me if you aren’t a mom, I’m sure you’ll find it useful too!)

From the moment most of us become moms, our attention and focus shifts off ourselves and onto the little life we’ve just birthed. And that is exactly how it should be!

The problem is that sometimes that attention just never leaves the babe and over the years us moms totally forget how to put ourselves first, even just for 5 minutes. This lack of self care can leave us looking wrecked, shattered, trashed, not our best!

But then there are some moms out there who looking AMAZING… and leave most of us feeling completely inferior.

Aside from the few mega mom babes at the school gate, many of the gorgeous mom specimens just happen to be the beautiful blogging moms we love to follow online… and that got me thinking…. Maybe these moms have a secret weapon that helps them on their way, because clearly most moms need all the help they can get when it comes to looking like a less exhausted version of themselves.

And when I started asking, I discovered that, YES, they do in fact have a secret weapon in their arsenal. They all rely on a quick beauty fix that perks up their complexion, brightens up their face and adds a sparkle to their eyes.

So, what are they?

I asked a few of my favourite beauty blogging mamas to share their favourite product for moms. Read on below for the go-to products they each shared.

These are the ones that make them look less haggard than they feel – some are skincare products, others are makeup items, all of them are worth trying out, especially if they come so highly recommended by mom beauty pros in the know!

Best Skincare Products for Moms

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
Charlene from Pretty Please Charlie

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser has been a staple in our home since Cara was born.

This super gentle cleansing lotion is perfect for sensitive skin and I use it daily to cleanse my face and Cara’s. It removes dirt, make-up and sunscreen without leaving skin feeling dry and stripped. This beautiful multi-tasker also soothes eczema flare-ups on face and body.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is a superb body wash, delicate hand cleanser, make-up remover and facewash for all skin types and ages. It’s a must-have!

Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion
Candice-Lee from In My Bag

The Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion is a LIFE SAVER. It it the one product I turn to when my skin flares up.

Both my daughter and husband use it too. As a moisturiser it’s nourishing, super gentle and un-fragranced. It also costs around R300 for a 200ml bottle which is a bargain!

Avene Eau Thermale Spring water
Chereen from For the Beauty of It

The one beauty product I always have on hand is Eau Thermale Avene’s iconic Thermal Spring Water. I literally could not live without this refreshing facial mist! I use it every single morning after washing my face and before applying my moisturiser, and I find that it really helps to wake up tired skin in a flash.

I also spritz some over my skin after applying my makeup, as a make-do setting spray that leaves my complexion looking dewy and fresh. When I’m having a breakout, I spray it on the affected area as often as possible to help soothe and calm my skin.

It’s also great for use on long road trips or while traveling – I even use it on my five-year old son for a quick refresh on hot days. It’s perfectly safe to use on delicate young skins, and I’ve heard that it works a treat on nappy rash. (I’ve also used it to dampen a serviette when I’ve needed to wipe grubby hands in a pinch!) No wet wipes? No problem!

Candice (above) also love this pure spring water mist for it’s nourishing properties that leave the skin feeling so lovely. It is also wonderful to calm sunburn and any minor skin irritations or redness. Her whole family loves it too! I think that makes it a WIN!
La Prairie Light Fantastic Cellular Concealing Brightening Eye Treatment
Luisa from BeautySavy

This La Prairie Light Fantastic Cellular Concealing Brightening Eye Treatment is a multi-tasking brightener, which I use to add instant luminosity to my cheekbones and eye area to disguise fatigue.

It conceals my dark under-eye and primes my skin beautifully for makeup, while soothing and conditioning my skin.
I particularly like the click-action of the portable pen with a built-in brush applicator.

Biomedical Emporium Retinol Serum
Emmy from Rouge Beauty

Retinol is my ‘mom-face fixer’. When retinol touches the skin, it turns into retinoic acid, which is an active form of Vitamin A. It is a skincare superhero that delivers results faster and more effectively than almost any other active ingredient.

I love it because it stimulates collagen synthesis, increases cell turnover and boosts elastin production (all very important for exhausted moms). As if that wasn’t enough, it also does a pretty good job at fighting pesky post-baby pigmentation thanks to its exfoliating properties. It also helps to keep the skin hydrated, too, by creating a healthy barrier function.

It can cause some irritation, but if you build up your tolerance slowly, you’ll be fine, and will soon see the benefits. I use the Biomedical Emporium Retinol Serum.

SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight
Kathryn Rossiter from Becoming you (that’s me!)

A new discovery for me has been us to use a product with Glycolic Acid in it every night as part of my evening skincare routine…. This power ingredient helps to improve the skin’s texture overnight by sloughing away dead skin cells and revealing new, brighter skin.

SkinCeuticals NEW nightly corrective cream (Avail from 1 June in SA) delivers 10% glycolic acid for an overnight glow. The glycolic acid facilitates exfoliation and accelerates skin’s  turnover and renewal rate, revealing radiant skin with improved skin tone each morning. A game changer!

Bobbi Brown Illuminating Balm
Shahnaz from Shahnaz Loves Beauty

As a professional makeup artist this is a super hard question because there’s more than one option – I’m thinking concealer, a dewy foundation, red lipstick and mascara and, of course, a good hydrating serum!

For me if I had to choose just one it would be a skin illuminator. This product is the key to brightening up a dull tired complexion. Mix a pee size into your foundation and you have the most gorgeous glow that looks natural.

I am currently totally obsessed with the Bobbi Brown Illuminating Balm which is an illuminator and primer in one. It totally lifts my complexion giving that extra illusion of an amazing complexion. I literally look like my skin is naturally highlighted. You can also mix in your moisturiser or just add in key ares on your face. Every time I have used it I always get a compliment on how good my skin looks!

The Benefit Boi-ing Brightening Concealer
Michelle from Glamour Magazine

When those broken nights reveal themselves in deep, dark under eye circles, the Benefit Boi-ing Brightening Concealer is my go-to product.

The pinkish shade of this concealer perfectly erases the blue circles. I simply pat it on before applying foundation in the week, or wear it on it’s own on the weekend for a quick cover up.

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ BB Tinted Cream
Megan Kelly Botha from byMeganKelly

I never thought that I’d be the girl who could slap on some BB Cream and leave the house, but, after learning how to take proper care of my skin, I am embracing the no makeup days more often.

I recently found out just how common skin cancer really is and have placed importance on using a daily SPF. I also have dark spots and freckles in my genes and would like minimize the sun’s effect on them, so on days that I want a little coverage, I opt for La Roche Posay’s Anthelios XL BB Tinted Cream which features SPF 50+ to protect my skin.

This fab product brightens my complexion and leaves my skin looking fresh, dewy and even. I really like how light-weight the formula is, and especially love the convenience of the packaging. I can completely understand why this baby is sold out all over the country, but seriously… I need a new one ASAP!

Why is this mom’s little helper? Simply because you don’t need any special tools, it takes a minute to apply and you have the convenience of sun care and coverage all in one!

As luck would have it every beauty blogging mom mentioned here chose a difference product – and they are each a very vital step in your beauty routine. So why not choose to add one of these to your daily skincare routine… and then aim at some point to use all of them (maybe when the kids have left home! haha!)

And if all else fails grab a bright red lipstick! Nothing perks up a face than a red lip. It may take a little bit of time to find the exact shade that suits your complexion, but once you’ve got that right you’re good to go!

Some great red lipstick shades to look out for…

Reese by Elizabeth Arden (limited edition)

Ruby Woo by MAC

Standout by Revlon

Thanks so much to all these beautiful moms for sharing their skin savers. I found this list super helpful myself and I hope you did too!

Let me know in the comments below which is your go-to product to help you look alive after 2 hours of sleep!

Kathryn Rossiter

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for almost 7 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
