Weekend Wanderings: Root 44 Market, Stellenbosch

Last weekend I decided it was time for us to have another one of our “Family Fun Days”, a regular outing that had been a monthly highlight for our family, but had in recent months slipped from our schedule due to Saturday sport and social life commitments. So when Sunday dawned sunny and bright, I knew it was time to revive our tradition!

Our “Family Fun Day” outings are sometimes planned and sometimes not. This day trip was to be one of the latter! We hit the highway with no destination in mind, just a sense of adventure and a nose for fun! The main idea is really just to enjoy a family outing and some quality time together. What the experience is doesn’t really matter, whether it’s great or a disaster, memories are always made and that’s what’s important!

Now I’m quite partial to the Winelands as a destination (it may or may not have something to do with the “wine” part) so I directed the driver in the direction of the N2…

As we neared Stellenbosch we noticed lots of activity at a certain spot, and as we had no schedule we decided a spontaneous investigation was necessary! Boy are we glad we followed the crowd this time…. they were on to a good thing!

After parking our car we wandered into the most wonderful market – Root 44 Market at Audacia Farm. Now those of you who live in the area may know about this gem of a spot but for us “townies” it was an exciting new discovery that we had never even heard of!

We wandered in the gate and past the amazing kid’s activity tent and outdoor play area. At first we were quite overwhelmed at all there was to see and do and smell and taste, but we slowly started to browse all the beautiful crafts, clothing and creations in the flea market hall, then followed our nose around the food market and eventually enjoyed the live entertainment on the large outdoor stage set under the trees. After doing a circuit of the whole market it was time to eat and we settled on enjoying some delicious pizza for lunch.

The place was humming. There were so many people out and about enjoying themselves with friends and family. Every one was having the best time and the atmosphere was really fun, festive and friendly.

Our kids were super excited to DO & BUY EVERYTHING so upfront we gave them each an amount of money for themselves to use as they saw fit. Obviously they wanted to use it at the first stall but after some coaching we encouraged them to hold on to it for a while longer and until they had seen what else they could buy / do with it! It was actually the perfect place to introduce a little life lesson!

After a few hours we reluctantly had to leave, but it was such a fun family outing that we’re sure to be heading back to Root 44 soon. Maybe we’ll bump into you there the next time!?
