I love discovering new restaurants and tasting delicious foods…
An invite to a menu tasting at The Mess was not going to go unanswered!
Located at the foot of The Rockwell Hotel in Green Point, The Mess is a recently opened restaurant and bar perfectly placed for after work drinks or pre-theatre meals.
Quirkily named The Mess after the 15th century term for a group of people who ate together. The name also brings to mind the military and naval tradition of referring to the dining hall where soldiers and sailors ate as ‘the mess’ as well as referring to how ‘messy’ communal eating can be!
And that is what The Mess is all about…. this is an atmospheric communal dining space that local and visitors will enjoy. A home away from home filled with the voices of companionship and camaraderie and a menu that emphasises the same… plates of shareable food aimed at getting messy!
Food is something that owner, Carlene de Gouveia, takes very seriously together with her food consultant Luke Wonnacott from Lukefoodalways. Yes, casual dining might be encouraged, but there is a sense that each dish on the menu has been thoughtfully selected with just the right balance of casual and sophistication. The menu is flavourful and interesting, beautiful and delicious.
The cuisine at The Mess is inspired by food from all corners of the world.
Our tasting menu included:
Starters of kale chips, Saldanha Bay oysters and Confit pork belly served with smoked apple & braised cabbage.
Mains of Yoghurt & thyme flatbreads served with mezze of French confit duck rillette, white bean pate and pickled goat’s cheese, Tuna ceviche with won ton tostada, avocado, spring onion, coriander, a very tasty Pork belly taco served with bbq mayo, smoked apple and charred corn slaw, a buttery grilled Potato gnocchi & samphie salad with courgette, asparagus & lemon dressing, a smokey Aubergine & fior de latte Melanzane with pine nut and parmesan and Pork loin ribs with a Chinese barbeque pork char sui basting which was incredibly tender and melted off the bone.
Dessert was a delicious baked dark chocolate lava cake with white chocolate, lime ice cream & roasted hazelnuts or a Creme brulee. I always turn to chocolate if it’s on the menu and it wasn’t a mistake!
As you can tell the food here is food you go back for time and again!
Pop in at The Mess for a quick drink at the bar or in the prettily lit and sheltered outside patio. Or plan an evening of catching up with friends around a delicious table laden with shareable food. This will become a popular place to hang out so get in on the action early!
