Lunch in the Haute Cabriere Cellar Restaurant

For some, winter = hibernation.

Duvet days, Netflix, heaters, blankets and never leaving the house, but, although there is nothing wrong with those kinds of days, the risk is that you’d be missing out on so much if you never went out on cold, wet days!

Winter in the Western Cape is amazing. The weather might be miserable… but it never lasts. The sun always comes out again and many times the weather during the day is mild and warm and the real cold only hits overnight.

I recently spent a few winter days exploring the winelands and loved every minute…

From the roaring fireplaces, to the warm welcomes, gourmet comfort food and delicious red wines, winter really is a wonderful time to take advantage of the quieter months in towns tourists love, such as Franschhoek!

The bonus is that most restaurants, wineries and accommodation run specials during this time of the year to attract locals, making it even more affordable to experience a world-class mini-break which would cost international tourists hundreds of pounds or dollars to enjoy!

One of the best winery restaurants for winter dining is The Cellar Restaurant at Haute Cabriere. This wine estate is literally tucked under the mountain as you leave Franschhoek to head over the Franschhoek Pass to Villiersdorp. It’s locations allows for endless views of the picturesque “French corner” of South Africa and is well worth a visit alone.

BUT, if don’t stop and stay a while, you’ll be missing out!

Firstly, Haute Cabriere is home to Pierre Jourdan MCC, so a glass of bubbles is the first order of the day upon arrive. If you’re lucky enough, you might even be able to try your hand at sabrage!


Then a tour of the cellar is an incredible experience… Every Saturday Achim von Arnim and his son, Takuan, treat guests to the ultimate in wine theatre and visitors are whisked away on an intimate journey through Haute Cabrière’s history and wine philosophy. Guided cellar tours and wine tastings take place from Mondays – Fridays at 11:00 and the Cellar Master’s Tour take place on Saturdays at 11:00.

Following this unique experience we headed inside the cosy Haute Cabriere restaurant (literally located into the side of the mountain!) for a fire-side lunch like no other…

The Marriage of Food and Wine

This unique Pinot Noir inspired menu has been created by the chefs to ensure that the flavours and textures on the plate are specifically designed to complement the range of Haute Cabrière wines.

My husband opted for the original pairing menu, while I decided to sample the Vegan alternative…

Our meal started with a delicious Truffled Cauliflower Soup with mushroom mousse and herb oil which was served with a Haute Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2015.

Other highlights from our meal included a mushroom, thyme  and phantom ravioli served with Pierre Jourdan Tranquille and a Vegetable Bourguignon with pearled barley and tapenade served with Haute Cabriere Pinot Noir Reserve 2013.

Each course was beautifully presented and the service at the restaurant was excellent. We loved chatting to our friendly waitresses and enjoyed the warmth of the fire… We even had our daughter with us for the day and, despite the fact that this is not a restaurant geared for kids, she was welcomed and well catered for with food options.

As we left we lingered a little bit longer to enjoy this view over the valley, the light changing before our eyes… We’ll definitely be back. Hopefully when the wind doesn’t have quite the same chill and we can sit on the terrace for the afternoon!

The Cellar Restaurant is running a 2 course winter special until 30 September 2016. Enjoy a warm soup, delicious 250gr grilled Sirloin steak each paired with a fine Haute Cabriere wine for R395 for two guests.

The 3 Course Wine Paired Menu is R345 and the 6 Course Wine Paired Menu is R465.

The Cellar Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday and on Sunday only for lunch from 12:00 to 15:00.
