Who doesn’t love heading out to the winelands for a long, lazy lunch of delicious food and fabulous wine? Well NOT ME. I love it.
Nothing gives me more pleasure than hitting the N2 highway and heading off for an adventurous day out, not knowing where I will end up or what I will discover.
There are so many beautiful experiences awaiting in these pretty part of the world and I was recently lucky enough to enjoy a day at Simonsig Estate just outside Stellenbosch…
My experience at Simonsig was part of my Solo Stellenbosch experience and so my time at the estate was spent all on my own. An interesting way to enjoy a wine farm and very difference from my usual company of husband, kids, friends etc.
What I discovered though is that when travelling alone you are never really alone. Yes, you might sit at a table on your ace but being alone means you are far more inclined to strike up a conversation with others around you and vice versa.
This was evident throughout my time at Simonsig from my wine tasting experience through to my delicious lunch. I was never short of someone to talk to… be it the sommelier in training, the waitress or the restaurant manager… the people of Stellenbosch made it a pleasure to spend time travelling alone thanks to their warm hospitality and friendly nature.
While spending time in the tasting room I was introduced to their 4 main wine ranges produced on the farm. Namely the Adelberg Range of easy-drinking wines, the Simonsig Cultivar Range which showcases the diverse grape-growing conditions found on the estate through expressive red and white wines, the excellent and exclusive Malan Family Selection of red wines and, of course, the first Methode Cap Classique selection created in South Africa, for which Simonsig is renowned!
After an enlightening time spent with the talented young sommelier, it was time to enjoy a more solid feast… and sample the delights of Cuvée, the signature restaurant located on the Simonsig Estate.
The word Cuvée refers to the best grapes that are carefully selected for producing the finest wine of the vintage and is perfectly fitting for describing the restaurant which offer dishes made from the finest, freshest ingredients, all locally grown.
The decor is a stylish blend of nostalgia and modernism. Large windows look out onto vineyards and allow in plenty of natural light. Wooden floors, high ceilings, soft curtains, Persian rugs, dark wood tables and chairs and a cosy fireplace make this a welcoming space that feels comfortable and upmarket. The food is pretty impressive too… Cuvée’s talented chef served up dish after dish of deliciousness which kept me lingering far longer than I should have!
My starter was a unique and delicious Camembert Creme Brulee with pear, walnut and rocket. An amazing dish with lovely balance and texture which paired very well with the Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc.
For mains I enjoyed a braised beef rib with parmesan gnocchi, confit turnips, edamame and carrot which I enjoyed with a glass of Simonsig’s Tiara.
Dessert was a highlight, an incredible citrus extravaganza… a line up of lemon mousse, naartjie granita & textures of orange and coconut. The ideal way to cleanse the palette after such an indulgent afternoon!
From the warm welcome to the gorgeous views across valleys of vineyards to Table Mountain, this dining experience was not easily forgotten and stayed with me long after I left… An ideal lunch or dinner venue for summer on the terrace or winter next to the fire.
