A Summer Picnic at Spier’s Farm Kitchen

Summer equals picnics in pretty places and last weekend we found ourselves enjoying a picnic at Spier on one of the most perfect days…

Spier is one of the premier wine farm destinations in the Winelands offering an abundance of amazing activities and experiences on the farm… as such I was apprehensive that it would be a crowded affair, but with ample rolling lawns and shady spots, it was anything but crowded!

We arrived to collect our pre-ordered picnic basket from the Spier Farm Kitchen and then made our way across the lawns to lay out our picnic rug next to a picnic table beneath some shady boughs where we unpacked our basket of delicious delights!

The Spier Picnics are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients all sourced from the farm where possible – from pasture to plate – a biodegradable plate of course, as all the packaging and utensils at Spier Farm Kitchen are reusable or biodegradable!

Spier is also committed to sourcing produce they don’t produce on the farm from within the surrounding area and none of the food is shipped, bussed or flown in from afar, but has rather been produced using sustainable, regenerative farming methods from local farmers. Animals are plant fed and the plants feed on the animals by products which means that a natural balance is kept.

The Spier Summer Picnic basket for 2 consists of  beautiful baguettes served with apple chutney and farmhouse pates, creamy camembert cheese, marinated olives, coleslaw with mustard dressing, caprese pasta salad with fresh baby tomatoes and mozzarella cheese balls. My favourite find in the depths of the basket was the incredible seared Spier farm coronation chicken served with toasted almonds and apricot. I can still taste it!

For the Easter season look out for egg-citing new additions to the menu with an Easter theme such as Hot cross buns served with roasted cauliflower and pickled fish pate in the adult picnic basket and spiced butter and beetroot hummus in the Vegetarian Picnic Basket. Expect Easter bunny carrots with hummus and Easter eggs in the kiddies basket!

The kiddies picnic bag came with a soft roll with cheese & cold meat, cheese with cucumber sticks and tomatoes, a Fruit Yoghurt tub, Root Crisps, a fruit juice box as well as a colouring in book with crayon.

After devouring their picnic lunch, my kids explored the gardens, read their books on the blanket and napped in the sun, allowing Brad and I time to enjoy a moment to ourselves and a crisp glass of Spier Chardonnay Pinot Noir Rose while enjoying this view from our picnic spot…

All picnics are served with a bottle of Spier Signature Wine and you can choose from Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Merlot, Shiraz or a Red Blend!

This was a delightful way to while away an afternoon and we really enjoyed the special time together as a family of 4, but it would be equally lovely with a group of friends or for a family gathering.
