Beauty Review: Oh wow, Oh-lief is lovely!

Given the choice I would surely choose to use natural and organic products on myself and my children always. It’s a personal preference and not one that I’m religious about as sometimes I do revert to “normal” products for ease of use or cost reasons, plus I get sent a variety of products to review and I often need to use these to be able to review them…. but I do look out for the natural options first when buying healthcare products for my family.

We like to use natural and organic skin and body products, even cleaning products where we can, but these can be difficult to locate especially on the shelves of your everyday supermarket. I often have to do an extra trip to the health store to buy our toothpaste, soap, shampoo and peanut butter to name a few!

What makes me very happy is finding the type of products I prefer on the shelves of my local shops… and today I’m excited to feature a lovely, local brand that is in line with this ethos of natural and organic body and bath products and is now available in certain Woolworths stores!

Founded in 2010 by sisters Christine Buchanan and Louiza Rademan, Oh-lief was born out of their love for nature and the desire to use products that would not harm their skin or the environment. After growing up in a household where green and organic were valued principles, Christine found herself in a predicament while pregnant with Liam, her first baby boy. In her quest to find a skin care range to use during her pregnancy, Christine was dissatisfied with the conventional body products on the market, so Christine and Louiza set out to develop a new range of natural baby and body products, based on old family recipes. The result is Oh-lief’s complete range of natural body products, made from 100% natural and organic, raw ingredients, sourced locally.

One of the main reasons why it’s NB to use natural & organic body products is that the skin is the body’s largest organ and much of what we put onto it is absorbed straight into the bloodstream – a scary thought when you think about all the nasties that may be lurking in your skincare products!

These products do not contain any harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, petroleum, parabens, artificial colours or nut oils and use a base of organic olive oil and beeswax, which is combined with the natural properties of a number of other organic ingredients to form a complete range of products that is ideal for all skin types.

Another bonus is that the products are all packaged in 100% eco-friendly packaging made of recyclable aluminium!

I recently had the opportunity to try a variety of these lovely products in their two signature scents Roman Chamomile and Grapefruit. Here are a few of my thoughts on the ones I tried…

Oh-Lief Natural Aqueous Cream is the first organic aqueous cream in South Africa and it contains absolutely no petrochemicals, paraffin or mineral oils which is amazing!! This product would is one I’ve been using on my kids daily and definitely the one I would choose to use if I had a baby. I went through tubs of aqueous cream when I had babies and I regret that now considering how bad the stuff can be…. I was told that it would be the best thing to bath my eczema riddled babes and I think it was a big lie. Anyway this product contains certified organic ingredients only, such as beeswax, natural clay, and vegetable and fruit oils, and is ideal for soothing dry, cracked skin and eczema! Besides being used a a daily body moisturiser it can also be used as a rinse-off wash or lotion on newborn babies. This double-duty beauty can also be used as a cleanser to remove makeup, and as a soothing treat for men who suffer from shaving rash. It’s a great product for the whole family.

Oh-Lief Natural Body Lotion is a rich, creamy blend of organic oils and natural clay to soften and nourish the skin, naturally. It contains 100% natural and certified organic ingredients, including certified organic coconut oil, certified organic sesame seed oil, certified organic olive fruit oil, certified organic bentonite clay, certified organic beeswax and Vitamin E. The soothing Roman Chamomile scent will also help to calm your mind, while the luxuriously thick cream simply melts into dry skin.

Grapefruit Body Lotion

Oh-Lief Hand Wash is enriched with certified organic Tea Tree Oil, renowned for its anti-bacterial properties, which helps to fight nasty germs and bacteria plus it is soap free, so hands are NOT left feeling dry and dehydrated but rather nourished and taken care of.  You can purchase a great little pack which contains this hand wash as well as the hand lotion.I love using a liquid hand soap in our bathroom and kitchen… far less messy and more hygenic than a soggy soap bar… so I’m currently using the Grapefruit option and really enjoying it’s revitalising scent!

Gift Pack Hand Lotion & Wash

Oh-Lief Natural Olive Body, Hand & Facial Wax are three multi-tasking beauty balms that contain a rich blend of specialised oils.

The Body Wax is great to help treat scrapes, scratches, dry patches, discolouration and sun spots. It’s also known to help with anti-aging as the rich blend of oils results in  younger, softer and smoother skin.

The Hand Wax makes is especially great during a manicure as it helps to soften and soothe dry, torn cuticles, while the lavender, roman chamomile and tea tree oils boast soothing anti-bacterial and healing properties. It also contains raw beeswax, which penetrates the nail and helps to strengthen it.

The Face Wax can double up as an effective balm cleanser to remove makeup and is suitable for sensitive skins. Simply massage a small amount into dry skin to loosen your makeup and all the dirt that has built up during the day, wipe away using a (clean!) face cloth.

Oh-Lief Natural Lip Balm is a lovely nourishing lip balm that leaves my lips smooth and soft with not dry, chapped, cracked lips in sight. Considering that most lip products eventually end up being ‘eaten’, it’s probably best to opt for as natural a product as possible!

Oh-Lief Body Oil is a wonderful product to use more regularly now that the dry winter weather is approaching. A blend of South Africa’s purest organic oils this product is infused with green rooibos extract which is over 200 times more powerful than vitamin E and is filled with antioxidants. The beauty of a Body Oil is that it moisturises the skin intensely helping to maintain healthy, moisturised, radiant skin. Spray directly onto the skin and massage in large circular motions until completely absorbed. The texture of this oil is such that it doesn’t run when you spray it on nor is it to thick. It absorbs easily and does not leave the skin sticky that some creams often do. I’ll definitely be indulging in some extra pamper time using this body oil over the winter months.

Oh-Lief Hand Lotion is a nourishing blend of organic oils and natural clay that help to soften and smooth hard-working hands. I love it’s soothing scent and the handy pump action bottle makes it great to keep in your handbag or on your desk without risking a leak or contaminating the product with germs from your hands or the air.
