We all have certain things that we aspire to achieve and experience in our lifetime. Many might call this a “Bucket List“… a collection of the awesome things or places that we would really love to do or see during our lifetime on this planet.
For some this Bucket List might involve running a marathon (crazies!), learning to surf, starting a business, writing a book, completing a degree or even getting a tattoo.
For me it always involves travel!
I’m all about exploring new places, experiencing new cultures, trying new food and soaking up a place with my senses.
I love local travel, I adore international travel!
They have all been incredibly memorable and very special… made more amazing by the people I’ve travelled with and the memories I now share with them!
Before we had kids Brad and I lived in the UK and this meant most of our international travel happened pre-kids. Since their arrival we’ve enjoyed many incredible family holidays around South Africa including awesome family safari’s (another must-do Bucket List experience!) but I’ve always dreamt of a time when we might be able to afford to take our kids “overseas” on their first international trip!
I know that travel has changed by own perspectives on the world so much and I know that being able to give my kids the mind-expanding gift of international travel is priceless but due to the weak currency of the rand we’ve never quite managed to get it together to plan this trip of a lifetime.
Yes, you read that right, we have some very exciting news to share!!!
For years we’ve been mulling over the idea of booking a visit to our friends who have a home in Italy. I was fortunate enough to visit them 9 years ago, but Brad and the kids were not able to join me on that trip (well, I pregnant with our youngest so technically she was there!)
Although it was an incredible time exploring areas of Italy I had not visited before, I found the trip wasn’t quite the same as most of the awesome moments of the trip – climbing the roof of the cathedral in Milan, cruising along the coast of the Cinque Terre – were on my own!
And, for me, travel really isn’t the same solo. I want to share the experiences with someone (or someones!)
Back to 2018… after spending YEARS talking about this “Bucket List” dream, recently on a random Saturday evening we had a moment of crazy and took out the credit card and BOOKED.
Yes, flights for four to Italy!
And all of this….
Our very first international holiday as a family is finally a reality… in June 2019 we’ll be winging our way across the continent of Africa to Italy where we’ll be spending 3 whole weeks eating pizza, pasta and gelato (plus doing a few other things obvs!)
It is a complete dream – one I have yet to wake up from!
There is so much still to plan and arrange, but for now I’m just enjoying this moment of bliss knowing that one of my Bucket List dreams is coming true and that I’m going to get to show my kids the canals of Venice, the Duomo of Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in real life! I can’t quite believe it!!
Plus, as my husband has in recent years discovered a passion for good wine, we can’t wait to visit the wineries of Chianti!
We all dream of living life to its fullest and obviously this dream come true is certainly an incredible opportunity which we couldn’t have accessed without the help of our credit card!
One might initially think that booking flights on a credit card isn’t the wisest move but what I can tell you is that now we have them BOOKED (and not just a “that will be nice one day” dream) I’m so much more motivated to make as much money as I can over the next few months – firstly to pay off the credit card asap, and, secondly, to fund the rest of our trip without going into the red too much. Amazing how much having the trip booked has inspired me to save much more than before! I’m now making do with the clothes I already own, buying less when food shopping and generally living with more of a saving mindset!
The reality is that the way we choose to manage our money can affect our lifestyle and a well-managed credit or cheque card is a great way to fund extraordinary experiences like this once-in-a-lifetime international family holiday. The key is to ensure you keep on top of your debt and that you manage it, rather than it managing you!
When you get a new bank card, you probably know something about the rewards but there’s a good chance you’re unaware of perks that can save you hundreds of Rands.
Used correctly, your credit or cheque card can be used as a financial tool to unlock the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of.
