My Favourite Finds for May

It’s the last week of May which means it’s time for me to share with you some of my favourite finds for the month so here goes…

1. My New DSLR Canon 600D Camera and camera strap form iMo
First up is my awesome new camera that came to me quite unexpectedly earlier this month… My very first Digital SLR camera was a purchase I made with my last paycheck before I stopped work to become a stay-at-home mom over 6 years ago. The idea at the time was that I wanted to get a decent camera to capture every stage of my new baby’s life and I was also quite keen to explore photography as a more serious hobby – little did I know that there would be NO chance of that happening for at least 3 years… Silly me – Hobbies are for people without small children! That being said I did enjoy using my Digital SLR but to be honest it didn’t move of Auto, ever! Fast forward 5 years and I started to pick up my camera again but with the view to using it off Auto! I had been blogging for a while and wanted to start taking better photos so took myself off on a photo course I’d found through a website known for it’s great deals in Cape Town. Even though I had done day courses before somehow the penny dropped and I suddenly understood what aperture, ISO and shutter speed settings to use! Unfortunately it was around the same time that my gorgeous 1 year old managed to get her hands on my prized possession, not once, but twice, and things didn’t end well! I had been hankering after a new DSLR for the last 2 years, my current one did the job but not as well as it could and I had endless problems with auto-focus and downloading images, even after some TLC at ORMS it was dying a slow death. So, you may be wondering how it came to be that I am now the proud owner of a NEW Canon 600D (R4695)? Well, I have my blog to thank (no, this wasn’t a review item) I was on a trip when I had an unfortunate fall into the sea and took my camera with me, not on purpose of course, but this meant that my prayers were answered and I am the happy owner of a NEW camera – amazingly this perfectly coincided with the delivery of a new camera strap from iMo… another one of my fave finds for May! Love the pink and white candy stripe strap… but they have plenty of other colour and pattern options to individualise your camera! Take a look here: iMo camera fashion ($22)

2. Leggings from Label Femme
Leggings are where it’s at for winter dressing Moms but listen up – don’t make the fatal fashion flaw of exposing your bum however – I happened to do this while wearing a too-short t-shirt and realised it’s a look that MUST be avoided at all costs. ALWAYS opt for longer length tops, jackets, jerseys when wearing leggings! However for comfort, warmth and ease of dressing there is not better option than a pair of leggings and I’m super chuffed with my recent finds from Label Femme – I went for 2 different tones of grey and I adore the cute little scrunching effect at the ankle – great for wearing with ballet flats but easy enough to tuck inside knee high boots. These have added a whole new host of outfit options to me wardrobe and one of my new fave outfits is in fact a summer dress paired with leggings, boots and a jersey. (R285 a pair)

3. WinStuff
If you know me then you must know how much I LOVE competitions – I adore entering competitions (and have been known to win some great prizes) which is why it was a very natural step for me to start hosting competitions on Becoming you! A new website which makes competition entering that much easier is WinStuff – a competitions directory for all South African competitions. Prizes range from money to cars to electronics to shopping vouchers to over-seas holidays! It’s competition heaven! Holding thumbs…

4. Urchin Art Cermaics
I am loving adding a few pretty things to my home especially my lounge. One of my favourite new finds has been this pretty little ceramic bowl by Urchin Art which I was given as a gift. I love the colour of the blue, the texture of the dots and the heart – all perfectly me! I can’t wait to add a few more pieces from this collection to my home – all their products are lovely! (R45)

5. Fluffy Throws from Woolworths
While browsing through the Woolies homewear section one wet afternoon last week my kids stumbled across the softest, fluffiest throws this side of a teddy bear… Well there was no dragging them away! They had fallen in love and were busy wrapping themselves in their choice of colourful throw and stroking their cheeks against them so much that I had to buy them each one… (Yes, what was I thinking shopping with kids – it NEVER ends well! But that being said this story has a happy ending.) I headed for the counter with a red and pink blanket trying hard to convince my son that duck-egg blue would be a better choice (because it matches my lounge decor of course) Feeling a bit left out of the new fluffy throw purchase, imagine my delight when the teller informed me that the throws were on a 3 for 2 special… Yippee! I raced back to get my very own throw in duck-egg blue and have been relishing it ever since – it moves around the house with me from the couch, to the bed and even to the desk where I wrap myself up while I blog into the wee hours! A great investment when you think about how much electricity we are saving. Blankets are the way forward people – Embrace your inner granny 😉 (R99 – R190 each)

There you have it – my 5 favourite finds for the month of May. What is your favourite home decor item at the moment? Have you made any other great discoveries this past month that are worth sharing with me or fellow Becoming you readers? Let me know in the comments below…

Kathryn Rossiter

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. Oh I am so longing for a new camera, the way I see it is one is investing in memories so very worth it.

Also I would die without my woolies faux fur throws and as one can never have enough I really hope that special is still on.
