Recently I was fortunate enough to be invited to spend a day having a beYOUtiful makeover with a make-up artist, image consultant, hair stylist and photographer! I headed off for the morning not quite sure what to expect but really looking forward to the new experience. I arrived at Anneline Black’s studio in Camps Bay and enjoyed a wonderful time chatting to her and discovering more about me in the process through a few questions she asked – not always easy ones I might add! She then shared more with me about the importance of first impressions and body language and how it’s an essential element of projecting the right image of ourselves (and also quite an interesting tool to tap into when trying to learn more about someone else!) She also asked me a bit more about what areas I wanted to improve and how I saw myself which were all helping her to get a better idea of how she was going to transform me….
Next up we headed to the studio to start with the hair styling – usually I wear my long, thick hair straight and although it looks ok – its just that, OK. Not great. I don’t have much time to do anything else and to be honest I’m not quite sure WHAT to do but what was so helpful was that she gave me some tips such as maybe changing the colour to something less “orange” with a bit more contrast between dark and light. She decided to use a curling tong on my hair and as it happened my hair took the curl quite well. It was lovely to try something different – and you can achieve so many different looks by moving the curls around, pinning them in a different way, teasing them or just separating them to look more loose and sexy! I am seriously considering investing in a curling iron – but I might just need to invest in a personal hairstylist too as my arms are sure to get super tired with all my hair to curl!
After the hair we moved onto make-up. Anneline is a skilled artist in this area and has done extensive work in the industry – for fashion shows, magazines, tv – she knew what she was doing but was also really great in explaining to me each step of the process and keeping the products and methods quite simple and straightforward. Some of the best tips I came home with were to use contouring and highlighting to full effect – emphasizing the cheekbones, cupids bow and slimming down the nose plus defining your brows is so important. She really worked magic.
After that she went through some of the clothes I had brought along for the photo shoot to decide what she thought would work best – the colours, styles and cut. And her verdict: I need to buy “younger” clothes! Well, yes, I am a novice when it comes to fashion and as much as I love buying clothes, trying to find something I like that suits me is quite hard. And then when I get home with a new purchase I find I have nothing to wear it with – most of my current wardrobe is a complete mismatch of stuff! The idea of a personal shopping and stylist on hand is a very tempting one indeed!
We then headed back over to Tamboerskloof to the photographic studio belonging to photographer Alison from Inspired Exposure where I was to be transformed for the camera into 3 different looks! First up Anneline suggested a casual day time look so I stuck to my favourite pink skinny jeans and paired them with a feminine white vintage style shirt and denim jacket.
The next look was quite far out of my comfort zone… Anneline suggested one of her own maxi dresses that was distinctly seventies inspired – a graphic print in bold colours – she transformed my hair and makeup with a few quick tricks and once again I was posing in front of the lights!
Alison the photographer was so helpful in telling me how to pose to accentuate my best features and hide the worst (eg. double chin! the trick is to stick your head out a bit if you want to know!) She was so relaxed and really great at her job which made be feel relaxed and confident. Let me tell you right now though that modelling is not as easy as it looks – in fact it was quite exhausting remembering all the things you had to do to get the perfect picture – tummy in, bottom out, shoulders back, chin out and up, eyes open, slight smile, head tilted, arms relaxed etc etc. Hard work to look this beautiful and I only had one day of posing let alone the whole not eating thing… somehow I don’t think I’m cut out for the model life 😉
My last look was probably my favourite, Anneline selecting a little black lacy number from my “old” clothes and we paired it with some black heels, statement earrings and a new up-do. She again tweaked my make-up for a more dramatic look. The third time around I was must more into the idea and really had begun to have some fun with my poses when all too quickly it was over!
The experience was one I won’t forget in a hurry and I learnt so much about how to enjoy being a woman, embracing my body and looks, emphasizing the better qualities, having fun with fashion and experimenting with make-up. The concept that Alison and Anneline have created is such a great idea and I really recommend it for all women who seem to have lost their way – especially us moms!! Alison is also a well known family photographer and over the years had noticed that lots of moms – especially those with new babies – didn’t want to be in any of the family photos as they weren’t feeling very good about themselves. For most of her clients it was because they were comparing their bodies to their pre-pregnancy shapes, and feeling like they had to get back to that again, even though their lives had changed 360 degrees!
“beYOUtiful” makeover sessions offer a style makeover paired with a photo shoot with you looking your very best… the aim of which is to help women to regain their lost confidence. The session includes a style consultation with Anneline Black where she advises on colours, shapes, clothing selection and how to update your hair and make up with a demonstration in which she shares tips on applying and contouring to bring out features unique to you. After the style session there is a photo session at the studio where you are styled and photographed looking gorgeous! And if you like what you see after the photo shoot you are able to purchase the prints for posterity – now that’s a gift worth giving – either to your wife to experience the whole makeover, for your husband to enjoy the results or to ensure your children can remember their mom at her glamorous best!
