My 5 Favourite Finds for March 2015

It’s the last day of March which means it’s time for my latest Favourite Finds post…

1. Avène Thermal Water Mist & Moisturiser

I was recently sent a press pack containing two products from the French phamaceutical brand Avène as the product is now available in South Africa in select Clicks stores. Never having heard of them before I had to do a bit of research to find out more and discovered that these products are well known around the world for the treatment of super sensitive and inflamed skin.

Research conducted by the Pierre Fabre group, who manufactures Avène products, suggests that the thermal spring water found only in the French village of Avène. The story goes that the properties of the Avène thermal spring were discovered in 1736 after a sick horse was miraculously cured after drinking the water! In 1874 the therapeutic properties of the spring water were validated by the Academy of Medicine.

The water contains a wide variety of minerals, including calcium, magnesium and silicates. It has distinctive qualities and unique soothing, anti-irritating and anti-bacterial properties. The water is contained in all the Avène products and strengthens cell membranes, reduces reactivity, improves the skin’s defensive barrier and restores comfort to the skin. This is great news for those of you who suffer with chronic skin conditions such as eczema, acne, sensitivity, redness or rosacea.

I’ve been trying out two products from their Eau Thermale Avène range this month….

The Thermal Water Spray is a fine water mist spray has been a lovely addition to my skincare routine. I’ve been using it daily in the morning after cleansing, almost like a toner. But I just spray it onto my face without the need for cotton pads. Then before it dries I’ve been applying the moisturizer which I have found to be a great way to increase the moisture levels in my very dehydrated skin. I’ve also been using it during the day when I feel that I need to refresh my makeup or just myself!

Other great uses for this wonder product are:

  • To boost skin care efficacy
  • Remove make-up
  • Enhance luminosity and radiance
  • Comfort stressed skin
  • Soothe overheated, red or sunburnt skin
  • Set make-up – apply and allow to dry for longer hold
  • Calm razor burn – for ladies legs and men’s faces!
  • Revive tired eyes – soak 2 x cotton pads, leave in fridge for a few mins and apply to eyes
  • Prevent nappy rash!

As someone who gets a lot of products and hardly ever needs to buy any myself I just might need to buy another bottle when this one is complete – that’s how much I’ve been enjoying this product! If you have itchy, sensitive skin I recommend you give this product a try. (R150 for 150ml at Clicks)

avene creme

The Tolerance Extreme Cream is the Avène moisturizer which I have been using after the The Thermal Water Spray. This moisturizer is great for those with dry, sensitive skin and I have been really impressed with it as it provides the perfect amount of moisture and hydration. I also love that the packaging is such that the opening of the tube prevents air and dust from entering the tube and contaminating the cream – a stopper pops outs releasing the product from the tube and then pops back in once you let go. You can also watch this short video about 3 South African kids who struggle with severe eczema who visited the Avène centre in France last year to be treated to a 3 week intensive program. The Avène centre is the first hydrotherapy centre dedicated to dermatology and is open from March through to November.

2. Walking on Sunshine DVD

Sometimes you just need a fun, frivolous flick to make everything right in the world and this is just that… Walking on Sunshine is the perfect little rom com to lift your spirits, not least because it’s full of feel-good 80’s music! Set to the music of ALL the popular hit songs from the 1980s this might remind you of another musical movie. I’ll let you guess which one after you’ve read the synopsis below…

The setting is a beautiful coastal Italian village where, after a whirlwind romance, Maddie is preparing to marry gorgeous Italian Raf, her sister Taylor has just flown in from the UK for the wedding but unbeknownst to Maddie, Raf is Taylor’s ex-holiday flame, and the love of her life… Oh dear!!

I loved this light-hearted little movie, and obviously sung along to all the songs! Thank goodness my husband was out for the night. It’s a real chick-flick and a good one to grab for your next girlie night in. (R123 on Kalahari)

3. 100% Cotton Onesies for kids from Woolworths

Recently my little girl broke her arm… after a few days we got over the trauma of the experience and I felt I needed to treat her to something special for being so very brave.

As she is one of the youngest girls among our circle of friends and family we are very blessed to be the receiver of lovely hand-me-downs which she is always very excited about and so am I given her perchance to fashion (see #Fashionabi on Instagram!!) but there is nothing nicer, for her or me, than occasionally spoiling her with a new outfit on a real shopping spree.

On our recent mommy date I took her along to Woolworths to see what I might find for her as a treat. As we were walking the aisles she piped up and said “I would really love a onesie”, I about to turn her attention elsewhere as all my experience with onesies have been of the polyester variety and with my kids eczema issues this just isn’t an option in our house. But as luck would have it right there in front of our eyes was ONE 100% cotton onesie aged 4 – 5 – her perfect size. It happened to be the ONLY one around and she was sold. We tried it on in the aisle and pretty much left the shop wearing it.

On returning home my son, aged 8, was most put out! To my surprise, he too wanted one – not pink leopard print of course – but a “boy” one. So back to Woolies I went the next day hoping to find a 100% cotton onesie in size 8 – 9! And luckily we found another lonesome one. Obvs meant just for us! He put his on on in the car!

And to be honest we have hardly taken it them off since. The super cute onesie’s have been a hit. And I’m totally in love with them too… maybe because they remind me of my little babies for just a moment longer! (From R160.00 – R220.00 at Woolworths)

4. Samsung Galaxy K Zoom Camera Phone

I had the opportunity to review the new version of my (now quite old) phone – the Samsung S4 Zoom. The updated version being known as the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom!

And this is what this little beauty looks like….

samsung galaxy K zoom

This was the first time I’ve reviewed a phone and although I enjoyed the experience I must be honest and say that it sucked not being able to keep the phone and use it indefinitely! The last time I did a phone review I did keep it but that was purely because I won the phone! This time was a bit different.

The problem was that after using the phone for 2 or 3 weeks it’s VERY difficult to go back to your old, scratched, memory-less version. I so enjoyed the mini-upgrade and all the fancy new features including the larger screen size and slimmer design (the camera lens no longer sticks out like a sore thumb, but is seemlessly hidden inside the phone when not in use!)

I’m not techie so I can’t give you all the updated specs as all I was interested in was that the photos were of a superior quality, what I like about both these phones is that the 10 x optical zoom is awesome, esp for those close up shots that other bloggers can’t get at events or launches making for unique Instagrams! The phone was also much lighter and more easy to handle than it’s predessesor.

If you haven’t ever seen these types of phone here is a brief introduction:

The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom is a phone-camera hybrid, along the same lines as the first model, the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Both phones are fitted with a permanent lens of a ‘proper’ camera – kind of like if you put a compact camera and a phone next to each other and pushed them together really hard!! The camera lens is protected by Gorilla Glass 2 to keep it safe.

The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom has a 4.8-inch screen and uses a Super AMOLED display, but the resolution is 720p rather than 1080p this means that the Galaxy K Zoom screen looks much less sharp than other top smart phones.

That being said it was still a great upgrade on the S4 Zoom and I would have happily traded mine in for this version… I still love the concept of having a proper camera with me at all times… definitely saves my back from carrying the SLR around with me all the time. Alas it was not to be, I had to send it back to the PR company feeling a little bit heart-sore!! (R6000)

5. Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum

overnight repair serum

A few nights ago I started using this serum from Dermalogica. I’ve been sent loads of serums in the past few months but not really got into using one on a regular basis so I’m hoping to turn the tide and take advantage of all the benefits of using one every night!!

This one is a peptide serum with Argan and Rose oils that help to stimulate cellular repair and collagen production to help firm skin and renew resilience. Plus the product maximizes nighttime skin repair to help minimize fine lines and increase luminosity.

After cleansing, I’ve been smoothing 4-6 drops into my skin and I love the pampering feeling of adding this oil to my face before bedtime. It’s also got a gorgeous scent which makes it feel even more indulgent but I do realize that fragranced products are not for everyone esp those with sensitive skins, fortunately this is a natural fragrance as the product is formulated without artificial fragrances and colours. (R850 for 15ml)

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. I really want to try that Avene Thermal Spring water spray! Just sent this post to a friend whose baby suffers with eczema wondering if this could help.

Aww shame re: the phone 🙁 That totally sucks! Just saw one of these for the first time 2 weeks ago. Hadn’t heard of it before.
