My 5 Everyday Accessory Essentials

Being a busy working mom of two, my attempts at style are minimal, which is why my style is minimalist! I tend to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to accessorising my outfits and stick to my tried and tested favourites that are more practical than pretty, but if I can get both right then I really am “styling”!

My Favourite Accessories

Sling Bag

Sling Bags are practical yet stylish. I love my black sling bag which accompanies me everywhere. The convenient long strap allows me to sling it across my body and keep my hands free. I far prefer a sling bag to any other style and would highly recommend this style to buys moms like me as it really is the perfect on-the-go bag. (P.S. if you’re on the market for a sling bags head to and shop now)

I’m getting older every day, which means I’ve become far more aware of my hyperpigmentation and sun damage. For this reason my go-to accessory for the last few years has become a sun hat, especially on sunny days! I have built up a collection, but I keep my two favourites on hooks at the front door so that I am reminded to pop one on my head everytime I walk out the house. Obviously they aren’t always practical for the grocery shop or the school run, but it’s always better to have one with you as you never know when you’re going to get caught sitting out in the sun for longer than you’d like. In fact, one of my favourites was bought as an emergency “cricket watching” hat when I found myself fieldside without protection during an endless cricket match in the blazing sun.

An essential in my life, sunglasses are a must for me. I got glasses about two years ago so I’ve had to forgo my beautiful branded sunnies for more practical ones that have prescription lenses fitted. Fortunately my optician recommended that I select a frame from the reading glasses section and then she arranged for lenses with my script to be fitted, so I have a “fairly” stylish pair of sunglasses now, albeit not my gorgeous Rayban wayfarers or Maui Jim Mavericks.

A watch is an easy way to make a style statement and I do own a few beautiful watches, however my practical side wins out again and I tend to stick with my trusty Fitbit as I know it’s keeping track of all my health data and I like to keep an eye on my step and calorie count during the day as well as my heart rate during my workouts. Since I got the Versa2 a few years back it’s been my go-to option every day.

Probably my newest accessory addiction are sneakers. I’m all about cute, flat, stylish shoes that are comfortable enough to run in, yet look cool. Well, cool enough for a mom of 2 teens! I recently bought myself three new pairs of sneaks and I’m living for them at the moment. My favourite pair at the moment are from Onitsuka Tiger by Asics. I just wished I had more outing options at the moment as I feel like they aren’t getting out much!

A bit of bling…

Sneaking this one is as it’s technically the sixth accessory, but no outfit is complete without a bit of bling and my “go to” will always be earrings. I have a gorgeous collection of Kirsten Goss earrings (that I’m always happy to expand) and so I tend to choose from this selection of beauties and know that whichever pair I pick they are sure to perk me up and elevate my outfit (even if it is still jeans and a jersey, again!)

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
