Earlier this week I was lucky enough to attend the premier of a fabulous new South African animated movie – “Lion of Judah” – at the Labia Theatre in Gardens. I took along a very handsome young man as my date – my son! He was enthralled with going to see a movie on the BIG screen (and it was very big for a 5 year old 3 rows from the front!) and we both really enjoyed the movie’s storyline – a great evening of entertainment for parent and kid alike.
The story follows the lives of a group of farmyard animals who are making their way to Jerusalem in time to save a friend – Judah the Lamb – from being sacrificed at Passover (Easter). Lion of Judah is a production that has been in the making for 6 years by a group of South Africa animators and they have done a wonderful job – the quality of the animation is amazing in comparison to recent South African animated movies and the movie does a great job retelling the Easter story. Kids always are drawn to animals and watching the story of Easter unfold through the eyes of these characterful characters makes is accessible to them. I had plenty of questions to answer during the movie but what a great opportunity to talk about key themes such as Friendship, Sacrifice and Freedom!
