Life Lately – January 2018

Hello all…. I can’t recall when my last Life Lately update was and I’m too tired to go back and check… but I’m pretty sure you’re due for an update!

So, how are you?

Me? Well, I’m really good. Well rested, watered and fed. (Too well fed if I’m honest!)

Around the middle of Dec I went offline. I took myself off the computer, laptop, iPad, social media, Facebook, Twitter, yes, even Instagram!!!

I know. How on earth??? For someone who spends her life on the internet it was kinda crazy to spend a whole month OFF the internet. But it was the absolutely best. thing. ever.

You see, I LIVED. I lived my normal life without worrying about work deadlines, social media posts, sharing my current situation on Instagram stories. I just got on with it and lived my best life. It was awesome! I know that sounds kinda crazy to you because that’s probably what you do every day and you don’t even give it a second thought. But believe me, for someone who has to always be “on” – taking photos, making mental notes, sharing stories – it was bliss to just be.

So I’ve made it my mission to carve out more “being” space this year – to fill my free time (firstly I need to find some!!) with the things I loved doing this summer…

More nature

More hiking

More friends

More camping

More reading

More swimming

More napping

More sunshine

More fun

More sea

More spiritual reflection

Expect to see a little bit less of me from time to time as I take time out to restore my soul. I’m not stepping away entirely. I love blogging waaaaay too much (yes, even after SEVEN years – more on that soon!)

I’m super excited for the year ahead, I have absolutely no plans (which panics me just a little bit), BUT I have hope, and I’m trusting that the year will unfold as it’s meant to.

Which brings me to my WORD OF THE YEAR.

For the past few years I’ve shared the Word that I feel encapsulates all I want from the year and recently I’ve noticed more and more people are doing the same!

So my word this year is FLOW.

I was inspired by a beautiful magazine I picked up while camping alongside a gorgeous natural river.

On pondering the word more and more I felt it represented me at the moment, as well as what I want from 2018. I want to go with the FLOW more. I want to trust that God is in control and hand over my stresses to Him. I want to be more relaxed and rested. I want to FLOW in the fruits and gifts of the Spirit. I want to FLOW through life with ease, no rushing or worrying or striving. I want to find the balance between trusting and striving and then FLOW in that spot. Going with the FLOW while drifting in a river is about being gently guided through the rapids and the bends of the river, surrounded by beauty and living in harmony with those floating with me! Another representation of FLOW was given to me when on the beach in Hermanus I was reminded about rip currents and how NB it is to go with the FLOW in order to get out of danger! There’s not point fighting the current and going against the FLOW – you just exhaust yourself and run out of energy, burning yourself out and ultimately risking your life! So, basically, it’s better for your long term health and longevity to go with the FLOW too!

So what’s YOUR word for the year – and what do you hope it will represent? If you haven’t yet had a moment to think it through maybe carve out an hour this weekend where you can get some clarity.

As for me I’m going with the FLOW and heading off now to enjoy one of the last days of the school holidays with my kids – without the guilt – because I’m going with the FLOW. There will be time for work next week!

Good luck to all of you heading back to work and school next week. If you’re one of the ones starting BIG SCHOOl for the first time (or just a mom sending some anxious kiddies Back-to-School) be sure to read my Top 10 Back-to-School Tips.

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
