Leisure & Luxe – a visit to the Delaire Graff Spa

Every now and again I manage to escape from behind my desk and experience a day like no other… a day so vastly different to every other mundane day that it stays with me for months!

Recently I was fortunate enough to experience one such memorable day when I was invited to visit the exquisite wine estate of Delaire Graff perched high above the valley of Helshoogte near Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands.

This was to be my first visit to this estate – world renowned for both its’ wines and its’ diamonds!

Yes, Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch is surely a rare and precious jewel in the Cape Winelands.

Set beautifully, sparkling magnificently!

Arriving at the estate the first impression is one of decadence and luxury. Abundant flowers line the driveway leading to an avenue of pin oaks, gorgeous bronze sculptures appear amidst the foliage and a green swath of vineyards leads your eye up towards the towering peaks and valley views like no other!

This is a destination wine estate without rival

The Spa at Delaire Graff Estate

My invitation to Delaire Graff was primarily to experience their recently revamped spa situated in the hotel reception area of the estate, this Afro-Asian inspired spa space is a serene sanctuary where the journey to total well-being is paramount.

I arrived and was whisked into the changing rooms where a beautiful enveloping white robe awaited. Safely tucking away my personal items I was then shown to the tastefully decorated waiting area before my very lovely therapist arrived to welcome me and show me to my spa suite where I settled in to my comfortable bed dressed with the most exquisite linens!

Drawing inspiration from ancient Eastern philosophies, its menu is centred around energies (chi) with treatments focused on life-giving elements, earth, fire, water, air and space.

In keeping with its opulent surroundings, the Delaire Graff Spa also offers some of the most luxurious treatments and experiences available in South Africa. From Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion to 24karat gold face masks, no treatment is too indulgent at this beautiful boutique spa.

From the spa treatment list I selected the Black Pearl Body Illumination Treatment, a 90 minute treatment that includes a full body exfoliation and massage, a facial and a head massage in one!! Bring it on!

The treatment started with a dead sea salt and algae scrub, followed by a quick rinse off in the adjoining shower area. I was then slathered in a 24k gold body butter and given an incredibly relaxing body massage along with my favourite type of massage – a head massage while my Cleopatra Gold face mask was in place!

Gold has been used on the skin since Cleopatra’s days in order to treat inflammation and fight the signs of ageing. It also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that help to improve the circulation of your skin, while giving it an undeniable glow. This 24k face mask exfoliates, boosts cell regeneration and improves skin texture and firmness. My skin positively GLOWED for a few days following this facial!

This must certainly be the most luxurious spa treatment in South Africa. 90 minutes of pure indulgence that transports you to another realm and leaves you floating!!

After my amazing treatment I was in no hurry to head home so headed outside to soak up the views from the terrace overlooking the 22-metre infinity pool. The spa also boasts a heated jacuzzi as well as a recently-revamped Swedish sauna and steam room making this an incredible destination for a full or half day spa spoil!

Spa Lunch at Indochine Restaurant

Fortunately you don’t have to go far after your treatment to spoil a few more of your senses…

With my senses of touch, sight and smell already having been satisfied, it was time for my taste buds to get spoilt with a light lunch off the Spa Menu at Asian-influenced Indochine Restaurant.

This gorgeous space is bursting with light and the food here is the perfect complement to your spa treatments –  featuring fresh, wholesome and nourishing ingredients, the menu appeals to the health-conscious and incorporates vegan and pescatarian options.

Most of the dishes are Asian-inspired and packed with flavour. I had the Donburi bowl with salmon (tofu is also an option) served with brown rice, lentils, avocado, edamame beans, soya dressing and tagaroshi. It was completely incredible! The healthiest, most delicious dish I’ve ever enjoyed!

It was hard to beat but my main of red curry with prawns, pearl barley, textures of pumpkin, snow peas and lavash was a great follow up!

Each dish was presented artfully with beautiful bright colours and incredibly intense flavours that made the meal as memorable as the spa treatment!

For a sweet end to my incredible day at Delaire Graff I ended my meal with a selection of small sweets – including a delicate chia seed pudding and a few treats off their High Tea menu.

The Afro-Asian High Tea may be booked on Fridays with any 60-minute treatment. Sweet and savoury creations are paired with delicate loose-leaf teas and a selection of homemade Kombucha.

This is ideal spoil for yourself or for someone special – even better come with a friend or your partner for a romantic day in the winelands!

  1. Wow Kathryn,
What a beautiful story. We were there on a whirlwind tour trying to see the most wineries in the shortest amount of time. I vividly remember the Graff estate and your story just brought me back there. Thanks
