What I…. Taryn from Hayes Happenings

Today I am pleased to introduce you to Taryn from Hayes Happenings – she is a Christian mom of 4 and blogs about her daily life bringing up her brood including great birthday party ideas, their adventures in home-schooling and some wonderful tutorials esp this one on how to make your own hobby horses! (I seem to have had a kids craft theme for the past 2 weeks..)

Anyway here are Taryn’s “What I” answers…

What I…

I fail … but there is Grace. I know that I fail. A lot. Miserably. Despite wanting to be an awesome mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend and more, I do a pretty good job of messing it up regularly. Which makes what else I know that much more significant. That is – there are only two ways to live. Nothing else in this world makes sense without knowing that there is a God who loves us so much that He is prepared to die in place of us and all the mess we make in this life. The freedom in that is without comparison. It’s pure Grace.

Oh let me count the ways! I love God’s grace. Plus I love that I get to experience love of the grace kind every day: wholehearted forgiveness from my kids, after I have wronged them; a new day to start afresh; the beauty of a clear, bright summer’s morning; my husband’s smile. I love romance and nostalgia. For me, it’s in the promise of summer as the sun starts to rise earlier and set later. Or sipping milo by the fireplace on a rainy winter’s day, cuddled with the kids under blankets, reading delicious living books and stories. Or the smell of the sea in the suburbs, all against the back drop of the magnificent Table Mountain – like a crisp cardboard cut out against the blue sky. Or a choc 99 nutty dipped ice cream. Every beautiful memory stirred by a scent or a picture – I love it all. I love reading and writing. My unfolding novel for my kids; a birthday letter to my child; a poem for my husband; a list. Seeing creativity spill over as words on a page is thrilling. So, I guess it’s natural that I love blogging. Each post can be as creative and eclectic as I want to make it. Or as straightforward and boring as I feel. I began blogging to share memories and experiences. I continue blogging because I’m addicted to writing. I love photography. From snapshots of delicious memories to those suck-your-breath-in perspective-shifters. I take mostly the former and admire the latter. I love homeschooling. As a trained high school teacher and former anti-homeschooler, I’m not in a place I ever expected to be: this homeschooling-mom-of-four-kids gig. But, right now, it’s a fantastic fit for our family and I am loving every minute of the freedom and flexibility that we have to learn, grow and enjoy each other at our own pace. I love the feeling of deep contentment when I look around and count my blessings, especially the four little ones, the handsome big one and the King who loves us all. And chocolate. I love chocolate. 😉

Got Words? Will Read! The bible, fiction, non fiction, magazines, blogs, social media sites, cards, packaging labels and even the fine print on the shampoo bottle. I guess my motto could be “Got Words? Will Read!” My favourite? Anything deeply penetrating, memorable and soul-shaking. This last month I’ve been challenged by Philippians (the Bible), The Help (a novel), Gladys Aylward (one of our homeschooling read alouds) and the SACHS blog community (SA home schooling bloggers).

Contentment, 100%. I want to be content in life. 100% content. While I’m working on that, I want a brain that remembers and retains; motivation that is efficient; love that is ever patient and considerate and a body that won’t buckle under the burden of ageing and this life. Oh, and an iPad2!

Ill fitting clothes. Really. I’ve decided that it’s time to realise that no matter how well I eat and how much I run, I ain’t going to be shifting that coveted dress size anytime soon. I’m happiest in anything that fits well, is comfortable and feminine. Long flowing peasant skirts and gypsy tops are my favourite. But plain ol’ jeans and t-shirt feature regularly too.

To get to sleep! It’s up there in that FAIL category. And the Internet is my greatest temptation – just one more blog post, one more browse around Facebook, one more link to follow… Before I know it, I’ve broken my self-imposed 10:30pm rule again. Sleep, I need, for sure. Because the lack of it spills over into the next day: in how I oversleep, snap at my kids, procrastinate or make silly mistakes. I’m grateful for grace, because without sleep, I need a lot of Grace.

Thanks Taryn for taking part in this series – it’s been great getting to know you. I hope we can meet up sometime “in real life” – as my son would say!

Kathryn Rossiter

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!
