As I’ve mentioned in a few recent blog posts, we’re about to embark on some renovations… I say some, I mean a lot!
For 14 years we’ve lived in this house… Our first as a married couple. Our first home outside of our own family homes in fact!
We moved in with two boxes each. TOPS. Our first coffee table was a brown box with a table cloth over it. Our first braai was held in the empty lounge on plastic patio furniture.
And now we’re having to pack up 14 years of STUFF and move it into storage. It’s A LOT OF STUFF. Holy guacamole. I had no idea that I’d bought so much. I had no idea I had spent so much. I had no idea how much stuff we really didn’t need or how much dust had gathered in every crevice of our home.
OMG.
WTF.
You don’t know how many times I’ve asked myself… and my long-suffering husband… “Whose stupid idea was it to renovate?” Unfortunately I only have myself to blame! It’s my own stupid fault!
BUT I keep telling myself it will be worth it, because I’ve been showering in a shower in a bath for 14 years. And nothing could come sooner than my very own en-suite bathroom. With NO black mould. NO gross shower curtain. NO peeling paint. NO climbing in and out of the bath to shower. I am literally counting the sleeps with excitement. There has not been a more excited person than I am right now for a bathroom.
All I can think about right now are bathrooms….
The only problem is that I have NO IDEA what I want. Well, I’ve Pinterested up a storm and I LOVE elements of all of the ones pictured below. But what do I want? What would work in our space? In our budget? Well, that’s another story and I’m a bit stuck.
What I do know is that I want a bath, a walk-in shower, a double basin, classic silver fittings and some prettiness like mosaics or Moroccan-style tiles or a chandelier. How does that all work together? I’ve no idea. I feel like I’ve got a pretty good handle on my kitchen style, but my bathroom style needs some work!
Any input would be most welcome…. 😉
Here’s my current bathroom “porn” for your pleasure…
Advice from your practical brother:
Don’t get one of those ‘no-door’ showers, you will spend an eternity mopping your floor.
Get a practical basin, a few considerations for basins:
Get one with enough space between outlet and basin so you can fit your hands comfortably to wash them without hitting them on everything.
Related to that point I suggest taps that point the water slightly towards you and not straight down.
Pay attention to where the splashed water will go, basins with very ‘flat’ designs have no channels to return splash to the drain. My one work had very square basins on nice wooden tables, the wooden surfaces got destroyed by all the splashed water that had nowhere to go.
