How to Wear: A Polka Dot Top

One of my favourite finds on a recent shopping trip at Edgars was a polka dot shirt – navy with white dots! I’ve been loving it and every time I wear it I feel very French, especially when I pair it with a red lip!! Yes, polka dots are no longer the sole domain of Minnie Mouse, but are in fact a very chic look that almost everyone can rock!

Polka dots are a classic print that are always in style and as far as prints go, they are one of the easiest to get right. If, like me, you’re new to the world of pattern and prints, then polka dots are a fun and easy print to work with especially once you find the size of dot you prefer the most. These are a few I found on a quick whiz round Edgars recently…

The trick with polka dots this season is to take a more modern approach when styling them, so to help you get started with this versatile print here are 5 top tips on how to wear a polka dot top…

1. Size matters

When selecting a polka dot top, shirt or blouse, you should evaluate two things: the size of the dot and your body type. The polka dots should be proportional to your shape, so if you are have a bigger bust, the print should be slightly larger to balance a bigger chest. Conversely, if you’re petite on top, the polka dots should be smaller to keep things proportional. If you’re into making more of a statement, try a top with larger dots. As with any pattern, the larger and more bold it is, the less forgiving it is. Taller girls might be able to pull off larger dots as if you are long and lean there is more of you to accommodate the pattern! If you prefer a classic, classy look or are a bit shorter opt for smaller dots!

2. Mix it up

Mixing prints is huge this season. A good way to wear polka dots is to pair with another bold pattern.  But keeping prints proportional is key!

3. Create contours

If you’ve got a little “junk in your trunk”, you may prefer to steer attention away from your bottom half and opt to pair your dots with a pair of solid colour jeans or a plain skirt.

4. Tuck it in

To accentuate your waistline and give your look a bit more structure, tuck in your top, or just do the “half-tuck” for a trendy look. Depending on the length and fit of the blouse, you might be able to get away with it being un-tucked.

5. Have fun

A fun idea is to match the colour of the dot with another article of clothing such as your shoes or bag.

Remember that the key to rocking a trend is being comfortable…. Never wear something that doesn’t fit or suit your shape just for the sake of being trendy. You’ve got to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing and that way you will be confident and look amazing – whatever you’re wearing!

And now for the big reveal…. my very own polka dot blouse from the German brand Tom Tailor available exclusively at Edgars…. (R649.95) What do you think? I’m loving it’s effortless style and the quality is great too so at least I know it will last a few seasons (if I look after it well!)
