How are you “Becoming You” plus you can help others on their journey!

What do you think of when you read my blog name? Have you wondered why I called it “Becoming You”?

Choosing the name of a blog (or a person for that matter) takes A LOT of time and trouble. Ask one of the many millions of would be bloggers who never got further than this step! Deciding on what to call my blog was one of the biggest hurdles to getting it off the ground. But what I can safely say is that after all the effort I put into naming my blog I’ve never once regretted the name. In fact I still love it.

What I love about the name is that I find it often starts conversations when I introduce myself or hand over my business card. A lot of people I meet in person who learn the name are intrigued by it and ponder it for a few moments. Almost asking themselves in their head what that means to them.

I really hope that the same goes for the people I haven’t yet met who read my blog. I often wonder what you think when you read it. What does “Becoming You” mean to you? Maybe you think of the two words as something of a challenge, almost an instruction to become more yourself. Does it bring up questions of what values and principles you have? Or what you have achieved thus far? Or even what you are currently working on about yourself or looking to improve or achieve?

Besides the word “Becoming” describing what readers can expect from the blog (adjective: attractive, lovely, pretty, handsome, fetching, stylish, elegant, chic, fashionable, tasteful), one of the main reasons I chose the name is that it describes an active process. or “the process of coming to be something”. One which all of us are progressing in – discovering who we are!

Being a mother involves many levels of sacrifice and caring about the well-being of others and I started this blog as a way of escaping the mundanity of that life… but along the way I’ve learnt and grown so much and now (being a few years older and wiser) I now see that so much of who I am “becoming” is based around the fact that I’m a mom because we learn the greatest lessons when we step into something that requires sacrifice and that is exactly what motherhood is!

To sail through life without giving any of ourselves to another person or cause would be to miss out on so much. There is real beauty in giving to others. But the truth is that this sacrifice that I make, albeit daily, is far far easier than the sacrifices that the brave men and women are called Centrum Guardians make. I have the luxury of loving the two tiny humans I sacrifice for. Imagine not even KNOWING the people you are risking your life for. Now THAT is true sacrifice and the people who take it upon themselves to purely be of service to others to others are worthy of celebrating.

A few weeks back I wrote about such individuals here, but it’s worth reminding ourselves again that these emergency and rescue personnel form an integral fibre of our wider South African community. Their hard work and dedication remind us every day that the journey to “Becoming You” is not a solo endeavour.

Knowing that there are people who would not hesitate to be of assistance in an emergency or personal crisis is a comfort we seldom think about. The individuals that have been nominated to be Centrum Guardians are often invisible community members that indirectly contribute to us living our best lives. Just knowing about these selfless individuals should inspire us to question what we can do to ease the burden for another.

centrum guardian

The four Centrum Guardians nominees have become the best version of themselves through service to humanity. Through their brave actions they show us the impact of excellence and altruism without the need for praise or huge monetary gain. That is exactly why the Centrum Guardians initiative is so important. Showing people that their work is recognised fosters a well-deserved sense of pride and encouragement.

“Becoming You” is also about taking stock of milestones. You become who you are when you are cognisant of your growth and can see how far you’ve come. The Centrum Guardians finalists deserve that opportunity too. The opportunity to stop and take stock of all their hard work.

That is where your vote comes in! Vote for one of the Centrum Guardians knowing that you are helping someone else to recognise how far they have come on the journey of “Becoming You”. Inspiring them, and maybe even yourself, to do more.

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. thank you for writing an article on these incredibly brave men, women and teams. I not only read the every word of your article, but watched each video. To say that i am deeply touched is putting it mildly. How does one select the one to cast your vote for when they should each receive a medal/ award for their selflessness service.

    1. Thanks for reading Rose. I was blown away by the dedication of these everyday heroes too
