Getting great deals with Gumtree

During my pregnancy I had to give up a fair number of my favourite things… sushi, alcohol, soft cheese, to name a few! At the time the list seemed pretty endless and like many a pregnant gal life become pretty staid with no vices to fall back on (esp during the time when you NEED something to get you through!) Enter Gumtree! Yes, you read that right… I said Gumtree. This handy little site became an addiction of sorts during both my pregnancies (albeit a good addiction!) and has remained a steady part of our lives ever since!

We first caught wind of the wonder that is Gumtree while living in the UK. We arrived with 2 backpacks and systematically furnished an entire flat using the power of Gumtree! One particularly memorable purchase (or non-purchase) was our THREE 2 seater couches (one of which was a sleeper couch) which we got FOR FREE via Gumtree. Ok we did have to hire a truck to collect them but we were pretty impressed with our find.

So fast forward a move back to South Africa plus a new baby on the way and we knew just where to turn when we need to furnish a baby nursery… at this point we were under the impression that furnishing one room would be easier than a whole flat. Haha. Anyway I digress….

Systematically over a few months I managed to find all manner of items (whether we needed them or not is another story!) Among the highlights was a compactum, Angel Care baby monitor, electric breast pump and not one, but two, convertible wooden high chairs! Plus so many other little bits and pieces in between that I would have a list far too long to mention here! Let’s just say a visit to Gumtree became one of the first things I did each morning when I sat down at my laptop (Top tip: if you’re looking for something particular you need to be on the site pretty often to make sure you are one of the first to respond, I know you can sign up for alerts but I found that I often missed the best deals) Once the baby arrived I literally had to wean myself off my new found addiction as we had everything we could possibly need.

And eventually we got to the point where I was ready to part with some of the items again… and again we headed back to Gumtree to upload and sell some baby goods that I tried to convince myself I wouldn’t be needing anymore! Sob Sob! Although the light at the end of the tunnel was the cash we made back. Babies cost a packet of cash so any saving you can make, either by buying second-hand or selling on your own items, is totally worth it in my book. Not to mention the “green” benefits of recycling instead of buying new!

Gumtree has really been a very valuable site in our lives. We have literally saved ourselves so much money buying second-hand baby products. If you’re expecting your first or your fifth baby it is one of the best places to head to. And it’s still the first place I look when we are in the market for an item. (Anyone looking to sell a ladies mountain bike or tripod for a Canon 600D?)

So, what’s been your best Gumtree bargain? Are you a recovering Gumtree addict like me, or still in the throes of your addiction? Or maybe you have yet to discover the wonders listed within the branches of Gumtree? I’d love to hear from you so leave a comment below…

She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

  1. I’m definitely a Gumtree gal. My favourite find was a huge blow-up pool for R100 which saved my sanity and my two boys from melting in the heat of last summer. I’m currently decluttering and reorganising my house so I’ve put lots of things on Gumtree to sell. I have a rule: I advertise for a week. If there are no takers, I donate whatever it is to charity.

  2. Hey Tracy
That sounds like a great plan. We have just done a kitchen clear-out so I need to spend a bit of time uploading and see if I can make some money back!
