Book Review: Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

When I was younger my dream was to open a Children’s Bookshop… just like the one owned by Meg Ryan in “You’ve Got Mail” if you must know 🙂  Unfortunately that dream never quite took hold but I’ve never lost my love of books and bookshops…

I especially adore children’s books and over the years have collected quite a few of the classics in beautiful published special editions… and always with lovely illustrations!

Today I’m sharing one of my newest additions to my children’s book collection and quite possibly my favourite children’s book yet!

It’s not one of the classics… but I’m going to be bold enough to say that I think it’s a NEW classic!

A few weeks back my daughter turned 7 and one of the gifts she received (from her uncle, my brother!) was a book called Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.

Since it’s arrival on her bedside table it has become her firm favourite and we’ve been reading from it every night. Based on her feedback thus far I wouldn’t be surprised if this book remained her favourite book for life!!!

Some of her comments so far include:

“I love this book, I’m not watching any TV, I’m just reading this book”

“I’m obsessed with this book”

“Maybe it will give me ideas of what to do when I’m big”

“This is my best present ever”

and when her dad called her for supper the other evening…. “I don’t care, I’m reading this book”

Can you tell that she likes it? 🙂

Here are a few more comments from new fans and Rebel Girls around the world…

So, what’s it all about??

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is a new record-breaking feminist storybook that follows the lives of 100 extraordinary women from around the globe. Real women of the the past and the present who have achieved incredible results, despite all odds. Rebel girls whose actions have changed the course of history, including Michelle Obama, Jane Austen, Simone Biles, Frida Kahlo, Ada Lovelace, Serena Williams and Amelia Earhart. Stories of scientists, athletes, artists, politicians, pirates and spies from across the globe are all told in the style of a bedtime fairy tale.

The book not only has inspirational stories but each mini-biography is accompanied by a full-page portrait beautifully illustrated by 60 female artists from around the world making it a colourful and captivating book that girls will want to dive right into!

What if the princess didn’t marry Prince Charming?

What if the sisters were supportive & kind?

What if the queen ruled the kingdom?

This is a collection of bedtime stories that you want you daughter to hear (and read). I think even boys will love the stories as my 10-year-old son was also quick to pick it up to find out more! Truth be told I want to read these stories too…. Bedtime has definitely become a whole lot more inspiring!

The writers of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls are both entrepreneurs who’ve experienced the frustrations of discrimination in the workplace and noticed how these gender stereotypes appeared so frequently in children’s book and films so they decided to do something about it. The book aims to show girls positive female role models which in turn will allow them to grow up more confident and with bigger goals.

Awesome Fact: When Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls launched it broke records as the most highly funded original book in the history of crowdfunding, raising over 1 million dollars on Kickstarter and Indiegogo!

This book will make an amazing gift (that keeps on giving) for any young, or old, girl in your life! Buy it for your Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Niece, Friend, God daughter – or for ALL of them!

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls currently retails for R326 (usual price R385) and is available on Loot or in good quality books shops across South Africa.

  1. Hello Kathryn! Thank you for such a beautiful article. We’re incredibly happy that your daughter likes it so much! Say hi to her from both of us! Yesterday, we launched our second Kickstarter campaign to announce Volume 2 + a podcast! You may want to check it out: http://bit.ly/kickrebel

    Thanks again,

  2. I’m going to pop in at Readers warehouse in Tokai on Saturday and will definitely check if they have it. Isabella loves to read and I’m sure she will love to get her hands on this book.

  3. I purchased this book recently for my daughter who is turning 6 in August. She absolutely loves it! Each night we read from it and I too am unsure who is more excited, myself or my darling Rosebud. It’s an absolute gem and a must for any mother of girls. It will no doubt become a classic and will be a book you will read over and over again.
