Glamping through the Seasons: Summer at AfriCamps Wilderness

Summer in South Africa offers a wonderful time to see our beautiful country. With many businesses taking a break and schools out it makes for the prefect time to get away as a family! As a family with a history of farming we love visiting farms with our kids as this enables us to give them a taste of the true farm life. AfriCamps at Oakhurst Farm in Wilderness is set high up in the mountains and is located on one of the few remaining large working farms along the Garden Route. It is a huge farm of over 640 hectares, 200 of which are pristine fynbos and indigenous forest.

What a perfect position to spend a few glorious warm summer days at AfriCamps Oakhurst Wilderness.

We relished the farm experiences, the natural beauty of the area, warm sunshine and the many summery joys!

Glamping Through The Seasons

AfriCamps offers glamping at 8 different sites around South Africa. Their tents can be booked throughout the year and they are the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding areas.

Over holidays and popular long weekends the camps do get booked up well in advance so make sure you are ahead of the pack and plan ahead a little! Their easy online bookings on their site makes it really simple to secure your spot!

Oakhurst Dairy Farm is a little piece of farm life paradise. The farm is really well managed and provides the perfect blend of fun activities, stunning views and lifestyle conveniences.

Accommodation at AfriCamps Oakhurst Wilderness

AfriCamps accommodation is made up of a luxury tent which is set up on a stand off the ground. The entire front of the tent can be unzipped so that one can enjoy the sweeping views from either the deck or from inside your tent. This is particularly awesome in warm weather and we made full use of the indoor-outdoor flow.

The tents have adequate space and can accommodate 5 people in two small rooms- one queen and the other a queen and a single bunk above it. Linen and towels are provided and the bathroom is neat with a shower, toilet and hand basin.

Food and Catering at Africamps Oakhurst Wilderness

With our own braai place situated on the deck we naturally relaxed into a chilled evening around the fire. While our kids played we could easily keep our eye on them as we settled into the evening and enjoyed the sunset together.

The camp also offers a lovely little farm shop. We could purchase all of our daily essentials there like milk, wood, bread, sweets for the kids and meat for the fire!

Braai packs and breakfast baskets can also be ordered via the farm shop.

Wilderness also offers a variety of lovely eating places but we were so content on our deck that we found little reason to leave!

We did enjoy some really tasty ice-cream after a visit to Victoria Bay which is a short 30 minute drive from the farm.

Summer Activities at AfriCamps, Oakhurst Wilderness

As the sun rises early in summer heading down to the dairy in the early morning (7am-9am) to see the cows being milked is a fun start to the day! You can also catch the afternoon milking session. Alternatively, greet the cows when they visit  the paddock behind the tents. The kids were fascinated at the different colours, shapes and personalities of each one and our baby enjoyed learning to say “moo”!

Enjoy a paddle on the beautiful dam, it is worth heading across the dam to paddle through the dead trees and patches of duck weed. Canoes and paddles are available free of charge at the farm shop. Our children could not get enough of this adventure!

Enjoy the bird life and see how many you can identify. We wished we had taken along a birding book but we did manage to use google to help us along!

Bring along your fishing rod for some fun fishing on the dam. The farm shop also stocks simple fishing gear.

If you find you need a little something to keep the kids occupied while you relax on the deck then consider the fun kids activities on offer at the farm shop. They include activity packs, notebooks and a few other fun items to keep little hands and minds occupied.

Enjoy some time taking a dip at the lovely farm swimming pool.

Take a wander to the children’s playground and enjoy the really high swing or tree house!

Enjoy a soak in a wood fired hot tubs. One can have a dip during the day when it is warm and the tub forms the perfect little splash pool or heat it up in the evening for a lovely dip on a warm summers evening! What a memorable time we spent in this hot tub!

Book a pony ride for your kids. At R50 a ride this farm favourite activity is always a hit with children! Horse rides for adults are also on offer at R350 pp.

Build towers and towns. This camp provides the most delightful box of wooden blocks which were left over from building the tents. Our entire family had fun playing with this set! Such a perfect simple way to keep the kids busy!

Bring along a book to enjoy. We found it so easy to relax and read at this spot. A good book, a cup of coffee and a comfortable spot was the perfect combination for a lazy afternoon. One of the best choices was the lovely hammock under the shady trees!

Enjoy sundowners on your deck while the sunset through the trees delights your senses!

Bring along some marshmallows to toast on the braai!

Hire bikes at the farm shop and take a trail!

On your walk to the dam enjoy spotting some tracks along the way and see if you can identify which animal or bird passed by before you!

What a special way to spend the last days of summery weather. AfriCamps, Oakhurst will stick in our memories for a long time as a special slice of family farm fun!
