A few Wednesdays back I spent the evening at the Galileo Open Air Cinema at Kirstenbosch Gardens in Newlands with some girl friends. Eat Pray Love was our movie of choice and it was a great way to spend an evening and kick start the year! And boy did we pick a winner of an evening…
It was one of those rare windless summer days that stretched into the most magnificent, warm, cloudless night. We lounged around on the lawn under swathes of stars above us while popping popcorn and virtually “traveling” through Italy, India and Bali!
The Galileo Open Air Cinema takes place in various settings around Cape Town including Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville, Kirstenbosch Gardens and the V&A Waterfront. “Doors” open at 6pm and we arrived on the dot so we could take advantage of the evening with a picnic supper before the show started just after 8pm.
And if you’re not up for packing a picnic there are also amazing food vendors selling divine smelling pizza’s, burgers, nacho’s and beer! I wasn’t aware that there were food sellers so didn’t bring enough cash to “cash in” on the delicious delights so next time I will come prepared!
The cinema plays an array of movies from old school classics, action adventure films and romantic comedies. In the next few weeks they will also be visiting various wine farms in the Winelands which sounds like a really romantic way to spend an evening!
I loved my evening at the Galileo and it was so much fun with a bunch of girls – although would be equally lovely as a date night I assume – in fact I think I should do more than assume! The atmosphere was really fun and friendly and I am definitely keen for another visit soon.
Here’s my sister and I enjoying the chilled evening (clearly my hair is VERY relaxed aka beach hair!)
Tickets start from R70 but I would recommend you opt for the R95 ones as these include a backrest and blanket (although you could take the latter).
