One of my favourite places to visit is the gorgeous natural garden of Grootbos in the Overberg. I’ve been lucky enough to visit here 4 times and each time it’s delivered even more than before!
The wide open spaces, the crisp clean air, the sunlight dancing on the blue horizon, the abundance of birdlife…
It all adds up to a pretty magical experience of nature.
This part of the world isn’t known as the Cape Floral Kingdom for nothing! It is a magical kingdom, unique in the world as one of the most botanically diverse biomes on the planet.
And it’s well worth exploring…
At Grootbos you can choose a variety of ways to discover the fynbos – by horseback, on foot or in a 4 x 4 safari vehicle.
We opted for the 4×4 fynbos safari as a way to discover the flowers and plants that make up this richest flora in the world!
The 4×4 botanical safari takes place in an open-topped Land Rover and it’s the ideal way to discover more of what Grootbos has to offer. The morning we headed out was “crisp” so we donned our ponchos and blanketed our knees leaving only our heads exposed to feel the wind in your hair!
Getting closer to nature is always worth it… we drove along enjoying the views of the Overberg mountain range, stopped a while to find out more about how the local people have used fynbos for millenia and watched as the birds and insects buzzed about their business.
The fynbos in this particular area is completely unique. There are over 785 recorded plant species in the 2500 hectares of the reserve and 6 new species, never discovered by science before, have been found at Grootbos.
On our visit the field were covered with a pink blanket of the Erica Irregularis – a species found only at Grootbos.
On a visit to Grootbos be sure to enjoy the 4×4 Fynbos Safari – it’s the ideal way to experience a morning of natural miracles!
