Robertson is not the spot you’d expect an ultra-modern restaurant to pop up, but that’s just the surprise that was waiting for me recently when I paid a visit to the @ Four Cousins restaurant in the heart of this small town.
Opened by the four Retief cousins (of the Van Loveren farm) about a year ago, this stylish space has been welcomed by both the locals and visitors to the Robertson Wine Valley alike…
Light and airy, the space has a welcoming atmosphere despite the high ceilings and modern furnishings. A series of 4 smaller spaces make the restaurant area feel intimate and comfortable…
We first spent time in the elegant tasting area, getting to know more about the various Four Cousins wine ranges (the best selling bottled wine brand in SA!)
They offer an incredible selection of wine pairing options to choose from – something for everyone! Try 4 different wines for only R20 or choose from the Sparkling, Skinny, Family, Fan or Zari selection.
There’s also a Kiddies platter as well as a Fiver Party Platter, a Scottish Cousin whiskey pairing and a Boet Beer tasting option. All the wine pairing options cost R55 each while the kiddies option is R35.
My choice was the Olyfberg pairing, whereby 2 of the Singles range of Four Cousins reds were paired with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, tapenade and olives from the Olyfberg range.
After whetting our appetites it was time for mains… so we headed over to another one of the stylish “rooms” for our meal, this one with huge glass windows and views over the garden terrace and kiddies play area.
We started with flatbreads to share and then ordered according to our tastes. My calamari wasn’t particularly tender which meant I got serious meal envy when my fellow diners got delivered these delicious dishes….
Chicken stack…
Pork belly…
Other items on the menu include wood-fired pizza’s, homemade burgers, juicy steaks and freshly prepared salads plus for the those who aren’t quite into wine there’s a micro beer brewery located on site and Boet Beer is available on tap!
Fortunately I made up for my misorder with dessert… Chocolate fondant with honeycomb crumble and beetroot ice cream – possibly my new favourite ice cream flavour!!
Next time you’re in the Robertson area be sure to book a table for a good portion of wholesome country food at this family-friendly spot. We’ll certainly be back.
