Getting floral and festive at Flower Cafe

Every now and again I’m blown away by an amazing, unexpected experience and my recent visit to Cape Town’s Flower Cafe was just that!

I was fortunate enough to be invited to experience the new interactive floristry experience launched by the Petals Group in August with a friend and I chose to treat my mom. But once my daughter heard about it she was insistent that she wanted to come too! As she is a lifelong flower fan I couldn’t deny her the opportunity and it turned out to be the most special multi-generational outing!

I think what was one of the best aspects of this was that I had zero expectations. I had no idea what awaited us behind the rather unassuming warehouse in Woodstock… I don’t want to ruin the surprise for you too much as it’s definitely something you need to experience for yourself…. What I can say is that from the moment we stepped through the door we were transported to a whimsical wonderland.

Everywhere we looked there was something else to absorb and take in. The whole space is filled with the gorgeous scents of flowers and around every corner is another surprise! We visited just after they had decorated for Christmas and this made everything even more magical.

During our visit there was a small party for a group of girls and our visit was perfectly timed as this meant Abi could also enjoy creating her own fairy garden.

My mom and I learnt how to create our very own “Tussie Mussies” which we both really enjoyed so much that we’ve each created our own floristry arrangement in the weeks since for friends! We also had an education in all things flowers from the knowledgeable staff – creating pot pourri, the language of flower and the history of the epergne!

The atmosphere at Flower Cafe is one of relaxed informality. There is a really creative spirit and excitement about seeing creations come together and the staff are so wonderfully hospitable that you feel like you’re spending time in a friends home!

“A magical space to unleash your inner florist”

There is a cafe on site where you can buy coffee and delicious homemade sweet treats and there is even space for you to sit and work remotely on the complimentary wifi should you wish to infuse your work with some creative inspiration. This is certainly a space you’ll want to linger longer at.

The idea of Flower Cafe was born out of the insanity of the COVID-19 economic meltdown, Petals Group (who were my wedding florists back in 2002) had to looked at what they had in their hands (custom-made props, a warehouse of décor items and their floral design business) and reinvented themselves beautifully!

“I think the combination of our quirky aesthetic with the power of natural beauty, as well as our innate desire to create and appreciate beauty as human beings that has gotten people so excited.” – Flower Walker, Founder and Owner of Petals Group since 1967.

Do yourself a favour and bring your mom, sisters, cousins, aunties and besties to Flower Café for a few hours of reconnecting with your creative side.
