As our kids are getting older we are becoming more aware of just how quickly time flies. This year both our children are no longer children, instead we now have a pre-teen and a teen in our home.
This means that in four short years we may no longer have both kids living at home. The thought is too terrible to think about too much, but what the wakeup call has meant is that we recently made the decision that ALL our future family holidays must be ones that our kids LOVE.
Our priority is to plan amazing family holidays that will create the best memories for them to look back on with fondness once they have left home.
These can be fun times together just the four of us or trips shared with family friends with kids their own age, but they always need to be thought of with our kids top of mind.
After 2020 served us up a year of strangeness and struggle, we knew we needed to reconnect and escape the realities of the pandemic for a few days in early Jan before 2021 truly kicked off.
At 14 our son has taken strain with the lack of social connection during his first year of high school and we knew he was struggling with his head space and wanted to do something that would lift his spirits and soothe his soul….
We needed to get him back to the bush!
This is our son’s favourite type of trip and he comes alive on the back of a safari vehicle (or in the front seat if permitted!)
Klaserie Drift Safari Camp proved to be the ideal family safari holiday destination. This private safari camp has an intimate atmosphere with just 10 rooms.
The lodge’s public spaces and gardens feel exclusive and luxurious, while the new adjoining rooms that make up the family unit are sublimely peaceful and private. With the warm welcome of the friendly staff and the relaxed environment, we all immediately felt right at home!
As mentioned, our kids love being on the back of a 4×4 so we all set out on our first game drive with much anticipation of what we might encounter!
As our last trip to the bush was 4 years prior, this time around felt like the first for our 10-year-old daughter who would often fall asleep on our previous night drives! Her eyes lit up with the excitement of each sighting and it was amazing for us to see her joy at each encounter. She was particularly pleased to have been gifted a guide book from our ranger, Emily, with a checklist and information about each animal that she dutifully ticked off as we went.
Taking kids on a private safari is made so much easier when you have a ranger who understands and engages with them. Emily was incredible with our kids, patiently answering all their questions, informing them of animal facts and sharing fascinating stories about bush life – from a tiny chameleon to huge termite mounds. She was a trove of interesting info and brought the bush to life on another level, ensuring our kids were kept enthralled by the full experience – even when the Big 5 were elusive!
Weaving intriguing stories with their vast knowledge of the flora and fauna, every drive at Klaserie Drift is a unique opportunity to better understand this wildest of places. As well as the continual search for our iconic animals, your guide might share an insight into the local history and conservation issues, help to discover an appreciation for the myriad of insects, birds and trees of the area or even introduce you to the subtle art of tracking.
Enjoying a safari at a smaller lodge certainly has its’ perks and one we truly appreciated was that we could take as much time as we needed at each sighting. This meant we were able to linger longer and observe animals going about their business in their natural environment.
A highlight of our family safari was spending time with the incredible River Pride, a family of 22 lions that our kids enjoyed observing – especially the cubs in various stages of development.
Another amazing offering at Klaserie Drift Safari Camp, for kids and parents alike, is that during the quieter times of the day – between game drives and meals – an exclusive Kidz Club is on offer for R150 per child per day.
Lead by a qualified teacher and field guide this unique offering for kids aged 3 – 8 provides fun, interactive and nature-based activities for 90 minutes, allowing the adults to get some much needed rest or a chance to chill by the pool or indulge in a spa treatment!
A typical 3-night stay could accommodate both activities on offer – Bush Crafts and Mini Ranger. In Bush Crafts kids unleash their inner artist with nature-inspired crafts! This includes tasting their own animal “safari” cookies and creating a bush-inspired painting masterpiece. The Mini Ranger offering is for the nature lovers and allows kids the perfect opportunity to find out what it takes to make it as a guide! They will learn how to identify animal tracks and signs and even make a mould of their favourite track to take home. They will also build a Bug Hotel and learn why mini-beasts are so vital to our environment, finally they will discover the art of spotting animals with a fun garden treasure hunt!
Even though our kids were above their usual target age, the guides adapted the tasks and offered them activities that were age appropriate!
Our kids were thrilled to have an alternative to the pool and jumped at the chance to practice their target shooting with a unique safari twist – bullets made of giraffe dung! Much hilarity ensued – and even us parents didn’t want to miss out and found ourselves getting drawn in to enjoy the fun!! So much for taking some quiet time out…
Fortunately there was another opportunity to rest when they headed off to the kitchen to make their own pizzas for lunch under the guidance of the chef and we could sneak away for a nap in our cool, quiet room. (those early mornings eventually catch up with you on safari!)
At Klaserie Drift kids are given the freedom to have fun and explore while remaining nearby and safe (thanks to the fact that the lodge is fenced). The lodge boasts a host of different board games, DSTV, a library of books as well as an incredible infinity pool to ensure kids are kept busy in the down times.
Our 2-night stay at Klaserie Drift was all too brief, but we made the most of our stay and filled every moment with exciting experiences and meaningful connections that meant that our stay felt longer than it actually was.
Klaserie Drift Safari Camp offers an all-round family experience that makes taking a safari with children of all ages really easy. Our time here was the ultimate family escape and one we will all remember forever…. playing perfectly into our new family holiday strategy!
Children of all ages are welcome at Klaserie Drift Safari Camp with a maximum of two children sharing with adults. (Kids 12 years and older are regarded as adults). Families with children under the age of 6 will need to book a private game drive vehicle at an additional cost.
Klaserie Drift also offer other specialist safari packages for exclusive group bookings, such as a Yoga and Wellness Safari, a Walking Safari, a Birding Safari and a Photographic Safari. Whatever your particular private safari request is, they will available for exclusive group bookings.
