The Hollow Tree at Old Oak

The Hollow Tree on Old Oak was first built in 1901 and used as the farm manager’s residence for the Bloemhof Farm Estate. It was then used as the municipal manager’s residence until the early 1980s, when De Tijerkombuis (related to the Volkskombuis in Stellenbosch) was created in the current restaurant area. The bar area was added in 1994. The building was declared a national monument in the 1980s and still boasts many of the original fixtures and fittings, including the floor, window frames and skirting boards. After further renovations in 2011, the Hollow Tree at Old Oak is now one of the most popular taverns and restaurants in the Northern Suburbs. Kathryn Rossiter

Kathryn is a South African lifestyle blogger and mom of 2 who has been blogging daily for over 9 years! She writes about travel, health, beauty, fashion, decor and family... but not food (unless it's food she's eaten made by someone else) as she is a hopeless cook. She only wakes up early for 2 things... a red-eye flight to somewhere exotic and early morning game drives. She has just finished an extensive home renovation and would prefer to never see another box again. She's never met a chocolate or glass of bubbles that she didn't like!

      1. Thanks for the update Redd. This post is a few years old and could probably do with an update! I’ll get on to that soon!

  1. Castelle Amare is not the best for lil kids, the strip of grass I front is dirty with cigerette butts, bottle caps, plastic lids, lemon wedges, straws and broken glass – a few things I picked up or took away from my one year old…the rock pools are awesome for kids Age 6 and up…very lovely friendly staff and delicious food…
