Exploring Elgin by Segway

Last winter we enjoyed this exciting adventure and recently I realised I never posted the photos…

Sadly the Segway tour offered by the adventure team at Cape Segways, based at the Elgin Adventure Centre, is no longer on offer, but there are other segway tours in the Elgin valley so I thought I’d tell you about our experience anyway!

Elgin is a gorgeous, green valley located less than an hour from Cape Town and it’s filled with forests and orchards and vineyards.

Our Segway tour started at the Elgin Adventure Centre located near the Elgin Railway Market and took us through the stunning Oak Valley Estate. Well known for its many mountain biking trails weaving through a grove of over 4 000 oak trees, a segway was a very unique way to explore the historic estate.

We arrived and after getting sized up for safety equipment we were given an introductory briefing and then a training session in the paved parking area to learn how to maneuver the off-road Segways, designed for off-the-beaten-track excursions.

No previous Segway riding experience was required and the professional guides ensured that we were all proficient in learning how to lean into our Segway and it was surprisingly easy once you overcame the initial fear… and so much fun! Kids under 12 are not advised to use Segways but our two managed quite easily!!

Once we were all comfortable on the Segways off we went to explore the mountain bike trails, dirt tracks and forest paths of Oak Valley. There were little wooden bridges to ramp over and muddy puddles to splash through which all added to the fun!

Along the route we enjoyed incredible views of the Groenlandberg, fields of grazing cattle, orchards and rolling meadows. It really is a beautiful way to experience nature.

The Segway tour was a great family adventure for all ages but it’s certainly one that teens will especially enjoy!

If you’re planning to enjoy a Segway tour remember the following:

  • Take warm clothes
  • Apply sunblock
  • Wear comfortable shoes (NO high heels)
  • Take your cell phone, camera and sunglasses at your own risk
  • There is a MAXIMUM weight restriction 120kg
  • A moderate level of fitness is required
  • NOT suitable for pregnant women

Segway tours are now available in the Elgin region at the Grabouw Country Club.

There is a Single track forest trail which will take approximately 1 hour to complete. The route has been altered and arranged to allow for a variety of terrain and multiple routes to make your trail more exciting through the forest.

Then the Lakeview trail is also very popular and is a little longer taking about 2 hours. Here you have the opportunity of climbing steep inclines to look out over the Eikenhof Dam and Elgin Valley. The trail will take you through pine forests to its highest point and then back down to the water.
