Over the past year or so I’ve seem more and more people opting to have eyelash extensions done and I’ve become more and more intrigued, so about a month ago I decided to take the plunge and give them a bash myself. But first a bit more about Eyelash Extensions…
Eyelash Extensions are individual synthetic eyelashes which are applied with safe medical grade bonding agent to each of the natural eyelashes to enhance one’s own eyelashes in length, thickness and curl. They are semi-permanent and can last up to 2 months if cared for in the correct way. They are perfectly safe as they are not attached to the skin.
Obviously I did some research and decided to visit Emma Brink who is known as a Lash Master! She runs The Lash and Beauty Room in Wynberg and has been doing lashes for over 10 years. She’s so good she even trains up lash technicians… who specialise in applying lash extensions and one of which was going to do my first “fill” of lashes.
After being shown to my lovely spa room, I snuggled down into a comfy, warm bed to prepare for my hour and a half application.
My technician assessed my lashes and discussed with me what look I was keen to achieve and then chose the right curl, length and thickness to create the best effect for me.
Now you might think that this would be a painful experience what with individual lashes being applied to your own, but I found it to be completely the opposite. Pain-free and rather relaxing – I’m sure I dozed off a few times! The only thing that you need to do is keep your eyes closed for the duration of the procedure to avoid getting the bond agent, or it’s fumes, in your eyes as this will cause them to sting.
And the results…. well I think you can see from the pic below (which was taken on either side of the appointment) that they make a huge difference!
I’ve always seen amazing results so I was hopeful that they would make a difference but the truth is I was blown away! The results were phenomenal and I have loved them so much that I’m planning to return this week to have a half “fill”
To be honest when I first set up the appointment I didn’t think they would be something I would do again because of the monthly expense (you need to do refills every 2 – 4 weeks, longer if you’re really careful with them!), but now I am hooked and have found myself looking for ways to find the extra cash in my budget to be able to treat myself to this at least every month… they are that incredible.
Here are a few more “After” shots of me rocking my eyelash extensions…
The best things I’ve loved about having extensions is that I haven’t had to wear mascara once since applying them (or take it off at the end of the day!) Usually I wear mascara daily only to find it half way down my face midday… constant panda eyes is not such a great look! I’ve also found I haven’t had to wear too much other makeup either as they seem to enhance your whole face. I loved how natural they felt – in fact you can’t even feel them! And I’ve definitely had a few more compliments this month…. plus my husband LOVES them so I think that’s a good reason right there!
Behind the Scenes Beauty Feedback
What I loved: The impact on my overall appearance and convenience of not having to wear mascara
What I loathed: Well nothing really. Occasionally I found that a last got stuck the wrong way and poked my eyelid or my eye and that was a bit sore but then I just combed them out with my handy little spooly brush. I suppose another down side is the frequent maintenance and cost but I think they are still worth it!
Cost: From R480 for a half set – R700 for a full set
Would I do it again: Hell Yeah!
So what do you think? Have you had extensions before? Did you love them or hate them? I’d love to hear your experiences… tell me in the comments below!
