Super safe disinfecting and eco-friendly cleaning with EVO Home (WIN!)

As a family we try our best to be as gentle on our bodies and our earth as we can. This means that wherever we can we choose to use eco-friendly products.

We have read many articles and watched many documentaries about health in the home, with specific reference to chemicals stored in the home and we are well aware of not only the dangers they pose to young children if they accidentally access them, but also how having toxic chemicals in the home can affect the long-term health of the whole family.

Members of our family are also eczema sufferers and the constant use of hand sanitiser recently left us looking around for a better sanitising solution that doesn’t leave hands ravaged by harsh disinfectants.

This is how we came across an exciting NEW product now available in South Africa, called EVO Home.

EVO Home is a convenient home appliance that uses the process of electrolysis to make electrolysed water from 3 everyday ingredients – water, salt and vinegar. The result is a highly effective and eco-friendly solution that can be used to disinfect, clean and deodorise.

What is Electrolysed Water?

Created when an electric current runs through a solution of salt and water, the molecules are separated into their elements, and then rearrange to create two new super compounds Hypochlorous Acid and Sodium Hydroxide.

HYPOCHLOROUS ACID (HOCl) is a super effective disinfectant. It kills germs, bacteria and viruses (yes, even COVID-19!). It is what your body naturally produces to protect and heal and is often called ‘natures own germ defence’. It is widely used in many commonly used products from wound healing, wound care and eye care products to beauty products and veterinary products. HOCl is extremely safe and non-toxic as it is a completely natural product with no irritants, preservatives or additives. It is so safe that it can be used to disinfect fresh produce and on food preparation surfaces.

SODIUM HYDROXIDE is a super effective cleaning agent that is commonly found in everything from skincare products to regular household cleaners. Even though only a tiny amount is created, it cuts through grease and grime and all sorts of household mess.

Both of these are safe ingredients that create the perfect disinfecting and cleaning solution.

More about the science

How do you use Electrolysed Water?

This multi-purpose solution can actually replace all harmful household cleaners as the solution kills bacteria and viruses, cuts through grease and grime, and eliminates household odours. It cleans virtually any surface including tiles, granite, wood, laminate, glass, rubber, plastic and stainless steel. You can mop floors, scrub the bathroom and clean kitchen counters with this one family friendly product.

The great news is that it’s also really safe to use throughout your home and gentle enough to use on fresh produce and kids toys! Plus it’s an economical option as once you’ve bought the EVO Home appliance you can make your own cleaning product for less than 50c a litre.

Not only will cutting down on bottles of cleaning products save you money, it will also help to save the planet – less plastic and fewer harmful toxins in the environment.

Our experience using Electrolysed Water in our home

For the past month we have been using the EVO Home appliance in our home. The way it works is that you plug it in and then add 1 litre of water plus 5ml of vinegar and a small scoop of pure salt (or you can buy the premade activation solution). Then you switch it on, watch the pretty blue lights swirl and in less than 5 minutes your electrolysed water is ready to be decanted into the supplied mist spray bottle and used around the home.

As mentioned there are a multitude of ways to use the product around the home (of which many are listed in the handy supplied manual.)

These are the primary ways we have used the EVO Home solution in our own home:

  • as a safe and gentle hand sanitiser
  • as a kitchen surface cleaner and disinfectant
  • in our bathrooms – to clean toilets and deodorise air
  • the clean bins and eliminate nasty smells
  • to remove mould from showers and windows
  • to rinse lettuce

To be honest this is just scratching the surface and we’re still discovering new ways to use the electrolysed water. Just this past weekend we heard you can use the solution to make your cut flowers last much longer!

For us the most challenging part of transitioning over to this system as our universal cleaner is that it has zero smell or foam. Getting over the deep seated association that “clean” means a soapy foam residue to wipe away and a lingering, artificial smell is quite psychological, but with the science to back up this choice, and the results evidence enough, we are sure that it won’t be long before we find ourselves truly converted to the toxin-free life.
