Date Night at The Galileo Open Air Cinema

On Wednesday last week we headed off for a date night with a difference… to watch a movie at The Galileo Open Air Cinema at Kirstenbosch Gardens.

It was the opening event of the season and we struck gold with a pearler of an evening – windless and warm – perfect for watching Tom Cruise shake it up in Cocktail!

We arrived early to get a great spot on the grass, collected our fold up back rests and blankets and then proceed to the food stalls to fill our hungry tummies… choosing between nachos, pizza, paella and more was as tough as it got on the night.

Just before the start of the show we headed back to fill up our popcorn box and grab another Savanna and then it was time to sit back and watch the stars light up the screen… and the sky! Stunning!

The Galileo Open Air Cinema has a blockbuster line-up of over 100 movies at various venues across the city this summer. There are new Friday screenings at selected venues across the city at The Palms, Central Park, Fedisa Rooftop, Meerendal Wine Estate and UCT and the popular Saturday Winelands events have also increased from one to two screenings per month. Every venue offers a unique experience and the fun atmosphere really is a great spot for families, friends and strangers to get to know each other – as was evident when our neighbours leaned across mid-movie to offer us a sweet from their stash!

This really was a wonderful date night outing too and with a huge selection of romantic comedies (Bridget Jones’ Diary, 50 First Dates), toe-tapping musicals (Mama Mia, West Side Story), cult classics (The Breakfast Club, Point Break) and even acclaimed documentaries like Searching for Sugar Man there is something to suit everyone!
